Position Summary
Bristol Steel is seeking an experienced Structural Steel Fitter for shop fabrication. This position is fitting-focused, with primary responsibility for layout, fit-up, and assembly of structural steel components in accordance with AISC requirements, shop drawings, and quality standards. Welding is required as part of fabrication.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Read and interpret structural, shop, and fabrication drawings, including welding symbols.
- Perform accurate layout, fit-up, and assembly of structural steel members and miscellaneous metals
- Tack weld components as required to maintain proper fit-up
- Ensure proper fit and quality of structural connections prior to welding
- Prepare assemblies for welding, ensuring dimensional accuracy and compliance with AISC quality requirements
- Use measuring tools, squares, levels, jigs, and basic math to maintain tolerances
- Perform cutting and material preparation using torch and other methods
- Operate fabrication equipment including shears, punches, grinders, magnetic drills, and overhead cranes
- Work with welders, QC, and other shop personnel to ensure accuracy and timely completion
- Follow all shop safety practices and maintain a clean, organized work area
Qualifications
- 2+ years of experience as a Structural Steel Fitter in a commercial fabrication shop
- Demonstrated ability to layout and fit structural steel independently
- Strong blueprint and shop drawing interpretation skills
- Proficient in layout, measuring, and fitting techniques
- Working knowledge of MIG welding (Flux-Core/FCAW a plus)
- Familiarity with AISC-certified shop practices preferred
- Experience fitting large structural members for industrial or commercial projects
