Provides court appointed indigent defense services within Van Buren County Courts. The Deputy Chief Public Defender carries a full caseload and receives direct supervision from the Chief Public Defender. The Deputy Chief Public Defender is responsible for providing supervision to the Public Defender’s Office staff, including Assistant Public Defenders, Investigators, and clerical staff in conjunction with the Public Defender.

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Graduation from an accredited law school.
- Member of the Michigan State Bar in good standing.
- At least eight (8) years of criminal defense experience or comparable civil legal service required. Demonstrated supervisory experience may be submitted for the required eight years of criminal defense experience.
Employment is dependent on background check, criminal history, and drug screen. Applicant must complete County application form.

This position reports to the Chief Public Defender.
Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers and filing cabinets.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to express oneself and exchange information both verbally and in writing. The employee is frequently required to move about the office environment; operate a computer and other office machinery; and move or transport files or other items to meetings and other office spaces. This is largely a sedentary role;
however, some filing is required. The ability to open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary is required.
Travel
Travel to Van Buren County buildings for job duties may be required.
