Police Officer, Legal Counsel
The Volunteer in Police Services (VIPS) program at the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office provides community members the opportunity to support law enforcement operations through non-enforcement, non-hazardous activities. VIPS volunteers enhance public safety services by assisting sworn and civilian staff, strengthening community relationships, and increasing the efficiency of Sheriff’s Office operations.
Schedule is flexible, and assignments will be based on Sheriff’s Office needs, volunteer skills, and availability. Volunteers agree to wear assigned identification or uniform apparel while on duty, and do not carry weapons or exercise arrest powers. A minimum time commitment may be required (e.g., a set number of hours per month).
Essential Functions- Delivers documents or materials between departments or facilities.
- Conducts home security checks.
- Enforces handicap parking violations.
- Processes abandoned vehicles.
- Transfers police vehicles for maintenance/service.
- Acts as a crime deterrent by being visible in communities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
No prior experience required. Must complete a VIPS orientation and required training. Must comply with all Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office policies and procedures. Participation in ongoing training as required.
Required Knowledge and Skills- Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with Sheriff’s Office personnel and community members.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact respectfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- General knowledge of confidentiality principles and the handling of sensitive or restricted information.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team, depending on assignment.
- Basic knowledge of office procedures, record-keeping, and administrative support functions.
- Awareness of appropriate boundaries between sworn law enforcement authority and volunteer support roles.
Must possess a valid Michigan driver’s license.
Physical RequirementsMust be able to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations, including, but not limited to, visual and/or audiological appliances, and devices to increase mobility.
- Ability to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry light to moderate objects (up to approximately 25 pounds).
Work is performed in an office environment and in the community. This role may involve exposure to inclement weather conditions, including rain, snow, and extreme temperatures.
