Overview

The Public Defender plays a crucial role in providing legal representation to individuals who cannot afford to hire private counsel. This position requires a commitment to justice and advocacy for clients facing criminal charges, ensuring their rights are protected throughout the legal process. The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of various areas of law, including but not limited to immigration, personal injury, and workers' compensation law.

Duties
  • Represent clients in criminal cases, ensuring fair trial rights are upheld.
  • Conduct thorough legal research using tools such as Westlaw to prepare for cases.
  • Draft legal documents including motions, briefs, and pleadings.
  • Engage in negotiations with prosecutors to secure favorable outcomes for clients.
  • Provide guidance on tribal law regulations and ensure compliance with relevant laws.
  • Collaborate with other legal professionals within the law office to strategize case approaches.
  • Maintain accurate records of case progress and client communications.
  • Advocate for clients during hearings and trials, presenting evidence and arguments effectively.
Qualifications
  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to the bar in the relevant jurisdiction.
  • Strong knowledge of criminal law and procedures.
  • Familiarity with immigration law and personal injury law is preferred.
  • Proficient in legal research and writing skills; experience with Westlaw is a plus.
  • Ability to draft clear and concise legal documents.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Commitment to serving underrepresented populations and understanding their unique challenges.
  • Experience or knowledge of workers' compensation law is advantageous.
