Job Duties

The Operating Room Technician demonstrates knowledge of the step‑by‑step progress of specific surgical procedures for all surgical services. The technician anticipates the surgeon’s needs regarding instrumentation, sutures, sponges, and supplies, displays dexterity in the use of required instrumentation according to technique, procedure, and special requirements, and functions effectively in intra‑operative situations that require in‑depth technical expertise and knowledge of anatomy and physiology.

The technician anticipates instrumentation/equipment for a wide range of simple and complex surgical procedures, pulls appropriate instrumentation, sutures, sponges, and supplies consistent with the surgeon’s preference, sets up and organizes the surgical environment prior to the patient’s arrival, maintains a sterile field, and has knowledge of instrumentation and supplies necessary for specialty surgical procedures.

Qualifications Non‑Certified Surgical Technician
  • Minimum of one (1) year recent operating room experience as an Surgical Technician, which may include time spent as a student in an Acute Care setting and/or time in an accredited Operating Room Technician program.
  • High school graduate or equivalent preferred.
  • Graduated from an accredited Operating Room Technician Program.
  • National Surgical Technician certification recommended.
  • Current BLS (AHA) certification.
Certified Surgical Technician
  • Two (2) years operating room experience in an acute care facility.
  • High school graduate or equivalent preferred.
  • Graduated from an accredited Operating Room Technician Program.
  • National Surgical Technician certification.
  • Current BLS (AHA) certification.
