Respiratory Therapist

Summary

May be eligible for a sign‑on bonus up to $15,000.

This position, independently or in consultation with a physician, administers medications, performs various therapeutic modalities and diagnostic testing for the cardio‑pulmonary system, responds to arrest and emergency situations, and provides CPR and life‑support systems.

• Performs respiratory care evaluative and treatment protocols.
• Delivers medications via aerosol and metered dose inhalers.
• Responds to all rapid responses, arrest or STAT situations immediately, maintaining artificial airways, respiration, and cardiac compressions.
• Sets up and maintains all oxygen according to protocol.
• Manages physiological and mechanical aspects of patients requiring life support.
• Weans patients off the ventilator.
• Performs chest physiotherapy and airway clearance.
• Assesses patients to recommend appropriate therapy.
• Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures (PFT, bronchoscopy, arterial blood gas, EKG, Holter monitoring, oximetry).
• Provides supplemental oxygen throughout the hospital and maintains and changes equipment.
• Maintains inpatient charts and clarifies physician orders for the department.
• Performs chart auditing and participates in the quality assurance program.
• Provides continuing education for the department, staff, and respiratory students; acts as preceptor and assists in orientation of new employees.

• BLS – Basic Life Support (within 1 month of hire)
• NRP – Neonatal Resuscitation (within 12 months of hire)
• RT – Licensed Respiratory Therapist (MI)
• ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support (within 12 months of hire)
• NBRC – National Board Respiratory Care (prior certification exempt for those certified before July 1, 2002)
• PALS – Pediatric Advance Life Support (within 12 months of hire)
• TEAM ADVANCED – Techniques for Effective Aggression Management (within 6 months of hire)

Associate degree in Respiratory Therapy (minimum 2 years). Must be a graduate of a school with a Respiratory Therapy program.

• Ability to troubleshoot malfunctioning equipment (ventilators, ABG analyzers, etc.).
• Interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with individuals and groups at all levels.
• Mandatory TB testing and OSHA training annually per Exposure Control Plan.
• Preferred:
  Years of clinical experience working in a medical center or similar setting.

Exposure to stressful situations, public contact, trauma, grief, and death. Must wear personal protective equipment (latex materials or appropriate substitute). Able to move freely with or without an assisted device; must perform the functions of the job as outlined. Vision and hearing necessary with or without assisted device(s). Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods. May require stooping, kneeling, or crouching.

Some exposure to blood‑borne pathogens; must follow My Michigan Health blood borne pathogen and TB testing. Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain regular attendance, and stay awake. Overall dexterity required. Physical demand level:
Medium. Must occasionally lift or carry 21‑50 lbs., frequently 20‑66 lbs., and or walk/stand/push/pull of arm/leg controls 10‑50 lbs.
