Details

This position may be a hybrid role for up to 50% of the pay period. The selected candidate will receive training in office to assist in learning the position. The length of time will vary based on department training needs.

Responsibilities

The employee will supervise offenders and prepare background reports on offenders convicted in Circuit Court to help determine sentences. The role includes supervision of offenders placed on community supervision through Court‑ordered probation or parole from a state correctional facility.

  • Supervise a caseload of offenders, including sex offenders, offenders on electronic monitoring devices such as GPS, gender‑specific, mentally ill, Interstate Compact, and other specialized caseloads designated by the Deputy Director of Field Operations.
  • Act as an embedded agent assigned to a local law‑enforcement agency, an Institutional Parole Agent, or an Internet Crimes Against Children Agent (ICAC).
  • Follow policy, procedures, Director Office Memorandums (DOM), and the Guiding Principles of MDOC.
Position Access

This position requires regular unsupervised access to and direct contact with probationers or parolees. Some assignments may involve more than 50% unsupervised contact with offenders. The role demands considerable independent judgment and impacts services and programs.

Education
  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, correctional administration, criminology, psychology, social work, counseling and guidance, child development, sociology, school social work, social work administration, education psychology, family relations, human services, or theology.
Experience
  • Parole/Probation Officer 9:
    No specific type or amount of experience required.
  • Parole/Probation Officer 10:
    One year of professional experience working with adult offenders, equivalent to Officer 9.
  • Parole/Probation Officer P11:
    Two years of professional experience with adult offenders, equivalent to Officer 10, plus one additional year equivalent to Officer 10.
  • Alternative:
    Bachelor's degree in any major and one year of MDOC experience.
  • Other pathways include one year as an Assistant Resident Unit Supervisor 11 or Corrections Shift Supervisor 11; or two years in roles such as Corrections Field Services Assistant E10, Corrections Medical Unit Officer E10, Corrections Resident Representative E10, Corrections Security Representative E10, Corrections Transportation Officer E10, Resident Unit Officer E10, or Special Alternative Incarceration Officer E10.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Investigating and interviewing skills.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Computer skills are desirable.
  • Ability to work under stress and hazardous situations.
  • Effective communication with others.
  • Ability to maintain favorable public relations.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and reliable vehicle for business purposes.
New Employee Training

All new hires will complete Non‑Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) of 40 or 80 hours of initial in‑person training based on offender contact level and job classification. Additional online training will be available to complete the required training package.

Ethical Standards and Conduct

Certain positions may require a criminal history background check. MDOC may screen out applicants convicted of a felony until such convictions are successfully resolved and the sentence has been satisfied. Applicants with a misdemeanor or felony conviction may be ineligible for employment until the completion of the imposed sentence, including parole or probation. All required documents must be attached at the time of application.
