Position: Cadet (Part-Time / Non-Benefited)
Location: West Olive

The Cadet role provides individuals that are currently enrolled in college level programs, pre‑professional, valuable experience, and insight into law enforcement operations. Cadets are given the opportunity to serve in a customer service role at the front desk of the Sheriff's Office Headquarters answering phones and assisting the public with a variety of tasks. They will also spend time working at the Jail, participate in department trainings, train and work with Road Patrol Deputies, and assist during community policing events.

The cadet must be able to work in a highly disciplined and structured environment and be able to maintain order and security. Work is performed in accordance with department rules and regulations, standard methods and practices, and established policies and procedures. A degree of independent initiative and judgment must be exercised by the cadet. Assignments and special orders are received from supervisors who review work methods and results through reports, inspections, and instructions.

This is a part‑time, limited‑benefited position working an average of 19 hours per week at the Fillmore Complex located at 12220 Fillmore Street, West Olive, MI. The Sheriff's Office Headquarters is open Monday‑Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Schedule is flexible to accommodate school, class, and police academy schedule as needed. Weekend and evening hours, as needed, and scheduled in advance.

Responsibilities
  • Performs various clerical and property movement tasks for the Administrative Division.
    • Greeting customers at our reception desk and on the phone.
    • Processes reporting updates from registered sex offenders.
    • Issues licenses to purchase handguns to approved applicants.
    • Releases impounded vehicles to owners.
    • Takes fingerprints for applicants and subjects ordered to report by the court.
    • Data entry including gun registration, pawn sheets, reports, impounds, fingerprints.
    • Participates in Road Patrol and Corrections based reality training.
  • Is scheduled with members of the Law Enforcement Division for occasional ride‑alongs, patrol, and other related activities to serve as an assistant and for general exposure and educational purposes.
    • Meets with Field Training Officer for mentorship, training, and development.
    • Exposure to a variety of Sheriff's Office specialty teams, including, but not limited to: K9, Critical Response, Marine Patrol, Detective Bureau, Dive Team, etc.
    • Completes special projects as assigned.
  • Assists with the process of new arrests and inmates at an adult correctional facility in a variety of aspects.
  • Assists correctional staff in the following areas of assignment.
    • Escorting professional visits within the jail.
    • Organizing inmate visits.
    • Clerical duties as needed.

High school diploma or GED required. Must be currently enrolled in a college level program in the field of Criminal Justice and/or a directly related field. Only those candidates at or near the beginning stages of such programs will be considered. (Upon full completion of that program and/or entrance into a recognized police academy or related academy, the position will conclude.)

Knowledge and Skills
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills and knowledge of practical conflict resolution.
  • Sufficient computer literacy to operate, enter, and retrieve data from computer systems.
  • Satisfactory work record and personal history.
  • Ability to interact positively and professionally with a culturally diverse inmate population with varying levels of communication skills.
  • Ability to sustain mental and physical stress and to react quickly, calmly, and effectively in emergencies.
  • Working knowledge of blood borne pathogens protocols.
