At Hemlock Semiconductor (HSC), we transform people’s lives by energizing and connecting our world through silicon technology. Since 1961, HSC has been a leading global provider of hyper-pure polysilicon, and is the only polysilicon manufacturer headquartered in the United States. HSC plays an essential role in the semiconductor and solar industries, with the vision of becoming the preferred supplier of silicon-enabled technologies to the low‑carbon, digital world.
Our polysilicon is used to make computer chips – the “brains” behind the electronic devices we rely on to make our lives easier, safer and more enjoyable. HSC is just one of six major manufacturers in the world that makes polysilicon used to create semiconductor wafers. In fact, nearly all electronic devices in the world contain HSC polysilicon.
We’re also moving the world toward a greener future by supplying the rapidly growing solar power industry. HSC is committed to doing good for our local Michigan and global communities, relentlessly improving our operations to remove supply chain carbon emissions. The low embodied greenhouse gas emissions in our polysilicon materials facilitate the production of ultra‑low‑carbon solar panels. These panels allow solar project developers and owners to lower the embodied carbon of their projects by up to 50 percent.
To achieve our goals, we draw on the talents of more than 1,500 employees and contractors. Our employees thrive in a culture that values teamwork, excellence, responsibility and customer focus. We recognize and value the diverse backgrounds and experiences of all of our people working together as One Team. At HSC, you belong to a team that is transforming our world.
SummaryThe Staff Metrologist provides technical leadership for analytical metrology supporting the manufacturing of electronic grade chlorosilanes and other high purity chemicals. This role is responsible for identifying, deploying, operating, and sustaining state‑of‑the‑art analytical platforms for trace and ultra‑trace impurity characterization, and for leading contamination investigations within clean manufacturing environments.
The position serves as a subject matter expert (SME) and cross‑functional leader supporting quality testing, manufacturing operations, new product introduction, customer issue resolution, and R&D in a fast‑paced, high‑reliability chemical manufacturing setting.
Advanced Analytical Metrology Leadership- Lead the deployment, qualification, operation, and long‑term maintenance of advanced analytical instrumentation suitable for composition and trace impurity analysis of chlorosilanes and other chemicals, including but not limited to GC, IC, ICP‑OES/MS, FTIR, XRF, SEM/EDS, and other optical and electron‑based spectroscopy methods (e.g., photoluminescence, electron energy spectroscopy).
- Serve as technical authority for method development and qualification, measurement system analysis, and lifecycle management for trace and ultra‑trace molecular and elemental impurities.
- Develop and deliver training programs for metrology staff, ensuring they are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to perform their duties effectively.
- Mentor and technically guide junior metrologist, engineers, and laboratory staff.
- Develop and maintain analytical standards, best practices, and technical documentation to support compliance and continuous improvement.
- Provide analytical and metrology leadership in a 24/7 manufacturing environment, supporting rapid troubleshooting and data‑driven decision making.
- Partner with quality testing teams on instrument troubleshooting, training, method transfer, and continuous support.
- Apply advanced analytical techniques to identify ppb–ppt level contaminants, degradation products, and transient process excursions.
- Support customer issue resolution, including root‑cause investigation, corrective action development, and technical communication with external stakeholders.
- Partner with manufacturing teams on new product introduction (NPI), technology development, and scale‑up of next‑generation polysilicon materials.
