Job Purpose

Under the direction of the building principal, the counselor works as a team with the school, parents, and the community to provide a complete, developmental counseling program focusing on academic, career, and personal/social development; coordinating and managing special programs and projects focused on college and career opportunities; developing plans and/or providing information regarding students’ goals; ensuring completion of students’ applications within designated time frame;

and creating an atmosphere to meet student needs through prevention, identification and intervention.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Possession of a bachelor’s degree or higher degree.
  • Prior counseling experience in a school setting.
  • State Certification which enables applicant to serve as a school counselor.
  • Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administration, students, and parents.
  • Must have excellent organizational skills along with the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Advise and counsels students in the areas of academic, educational, and in personal/social development.
  • Counsels students, parents, or guardians in individual and/or group sessions for the purpose of enhancing student success in school.
  • Planning and/or promoting programs which enhance the academic, social or emotional growth of students.
  • Consistently uses a variety of instructional strategies that consider diverse student needs and learning differences while engaging all students.
  • Provides guidance counseling to students through planned activities in individual, small group, or classroom settings to convey educational, social, and important school information, and offers workshops/seminars for parents.
  • Consults, facilitates, and maintains communication with parents, teachers, administrators, and pertinent agents on specific student and parent academic and educational matters including academic modifications and/or accommodations.
  • Provides feedback and recommends appropriate action and solutions to individual student’s academic and educational needs and abilities.
  • Provide appropriate test applications and interpretations.
  • Create, coordinate, and/or assist with 504 plans and meetings.
  • Participates on the MTSS team, identifies students who may need targeted or intensive services, and coordinates with the intervention support team.
  • Assists students/parents in understanding school policies and procedures.
  • Provides brief counseling to address social and emotional concerns and appropriately refers students to the intervention support team.
  • Supports and attends appropriate student activities and events.
  • Develop and maintain skills needed to utilize technology systems and participate in professional development activities.
  • Develop a network of community resources for parents, students, and staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, willingness to learn.
  • Knowledge of records administration and maintenance techniques and procedures.
  • Knowledge of productivity applications such as Microsoft Office, Google, Student Database, etc.
  • Skills to effectively communicate with a variety of stakeholders, both orally and in writing.
  • Skills necessary to integrate and utilize district technology on a daily basis to maintain proficiency, as required skill sets change with technology and or the needs of the district.
  • Ability to explain and demonstrate appropriate teaching techniques.
  • Ability to set and meet goals evaluated through ongoing and annual administrator feedback and achievement of objectives and agree upon professional/personal goals.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external contacts.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
Supervisory Responsibilities

Positions regularly supervises students.
