The Controller is the primary accounting authority for Killer Brownie and leads the company’s internal accounting function in a growing manufacturing environment. This is a hands‑on role within a small, highly collaborative organization and is best suited for an accounting leader who is comfortable working directly in the details while also setting direction, applying sound judgment, and mentoring others.
The Controller will oversee the transition of accounting responsibilities from a third‑party provider to fully in‑house operations and will personally own accounting policy decisions, including inventory valuation, cost accounting, accrual methodologies, and internal controls. This role partners closely with operations and leadership, spending time understanding plant and manufacturing processes to ensure financial reporting accurately reflects how the business operates.
- Serve as the primary accounting authority, owning accounting policies, judgments, and GAAP interpretations.
- Lead monthly, quarterly, and year‑end close processes, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and timeliness.
- Personally prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and close activities in partnership with the Staff Accountant, particularly during the transition from third‑party accounting support.
- Oversee general ledger accounting, including accruals, prepaids, fixed assets, depreciation, inventory, intercompany transactions, bank reconciliations, and loans.
- Prepare and review financial statements and supporting schedules.
- Ensure accounting records and financial reporting comply with US GAAP.
- Design, document, and continuously improve accounting processes, procedures, and internal controls appropriate for a growing manufacturing company.
- Own inventory valuation and cost accounting methodologies, ensuring accurate product costing and margin reporting.
- Partner with plant leadership and operations teams to establish and maintain standard costs, consumption assumptions, and disciplined production reporting processes.
- Analyze manufacturing variances (yield, labor, overhead, purchase price) and translate results into actionable insights.
- Support development of SKU‑level margin analysis to improve visibility into product profitability.
- Ensure inventory adjustments, losses, and variances are accurately recorded, well understood, and clearly communicated.
- Serve as the financial owner and co‑administrator of the Net Suite ERP system.
- Ensure ERP configuration aligns with accounting, manufacturing, and operational processes.
- Partner with IT and operations to manage user roles, permissions, and internal controls.
- Lead and support system enhancements related to accounting, inventory, and reporting.
- Train and support internal teams on ERP best practices to improve data quality and adoption.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis in partnership with Business Operations leadership.
- Provide financial insights that support operational planning, performance improvement, and growth initiatives.
- Prepare ad‑hoc analyses and financial metrics to support leadership and board‑level discussions.
- Lead coordination with external auditors, tax advisors, and banking partners.
- Ensure compliance with tax, regulatory, and reporting requirements in coordination with external advisors.
- Supervise and mentor the Staff Accountant, providing hands‑on coaching and technical guidance.
- Foster a collaborative, accountable, and detail‑oriented accounting function.
- Help identify future finance and accounting needs as the company grows.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
- CPA preferred but not required; proven manufacturing and cost accounting experience is highly valued.
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including experience in a manufacturing or cost accounting environment.
- Experience serving as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or senior accounting leader.
- Strong knowledge of US GAAP, internal controls, and financial reporting.
- Hands‑on experience with ERP systems;
Net Suite experience strongly preferred. - Comfortable working closely with operations and spending time on the plant floor to understand manufacturing processes.
- Comfortable operating in a small‑company environment where senior leaders are expected to be hands‑on and involved in the details.
- Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to balance hands‑on execution with leadership and long‑term thinking in a fast‑paced, growing organization.
