Position: OCEAN RESCUE LIFEGUARD, PT

Overview

Nature of Work

This recruitment will close on Friday, February 20, 2026 at 5:00 PM. Specialized work in the enforcement of regulations and the protection of life at a City beach. Work involves maintaining orderly behavior on the part of swimmers, protecting swimmers from injury or loss of life by drowning, and rescuing those in distress. Work is performed on an assigned shift which may vary.

Duties include patrolling and observing the beach to ensure appropriate use by patrons, enforcing beach regulations, and responding to emergency situations. Work is performed independently in accordance with established procedures and is reviewed by a supervisor via visual observation and inspection.

Essential Functions

The duties of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Patrolling, observing, and supervising the beach and surrounding areas to ensure the safety of all users;
  • Enforcing beach safety regulations and department policies and procedures to prevent accidents and maintain order;
  • Taking charge in emergency situations and assisting or rescuing swimmers in distress using established rescue techniques;
  • Administering first aid for cuts or injuries and providing CPR as necessary;
  • Reporting emergencies to the supervisor;
  • Assisting and participating in in-service staff trainings and safety drills;
  • Assisting in in-service training sessions on the use of emergency and first-aid equipment;
  • Monitoring beach conditions and informing guests of current swimming conditions, including temperatures, wind, sea state, and barometer readings;
  • Performing custodial services to maintain clean and orderly emergency vehicles, headquarters, lifeguard towers, and surrounding areas (including locker rooms, bathrooms, and offices);
  • Ensuring benches and other movable equipment are kept at assigned locations;
  • Answering inquiries from beach patrons;
  • Maintaining, repairing, and inspecting rescue and emergency life support equipment;
  • Assisting in the installation of buoys in the ocean per safety requirements and laws;
  • Painting machinery and equipment to protect against rust;
  • Compiling, recording, and maintaining simple data (e.g., attendance figures, safety checklists, and reported incidents);
  • Ensuring accident reports and other records are properly completed and forwarded to the supervisor;
  • May require periodic physical fitness examinations and medical check-ups to maintain eligibility; and
  • Performing other related work as required.
Minimum Requirements

A high school diploma or equivalent and six (6) months of lifeguard experience. Beach or ocean lifeguard experience is preferred. A State of Florida Department of Health Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification is highly desirable.

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience beyond a high school diploma or equivalent and six (6) months of the required experience.

Special Requirements
  • Applicants must be 18 years of age at time of application.
  • Must be able to pass the City of Miami’s performance test, which may include swimming, running, and simulated rescue exercises.
  • Maintain current:
    Lifeguard Training, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.
  • A valid driver’s license from any state may be utilized upon application; prior to appointment a Florida Driver’s License must be presented and maintained current.
  • A First Responder Certificate or Emergency Medical Response Certification must be obtained within 30 days of employment and maintained.
Special Notes
  • Employees will work various shifts, including nights, holidays, and weekends.
  • Employees will be required to work a minimum of 20 hours per biweekly pay period.
  • Candidates will be subject to a Level II background screening.
