Position: OCEAN RESCUE LIFEGUARD, PT

Overview

Specialized work in the enforcement of regulations and the protection of life at a City beach. Work involves responsibility for maintaining orderly behavior on the part of swimmers at a City beach, protecting swimmers from injury or loss of life by drowning, and for rescuing those who might be in distress. Work is performed on an assigned shift which may vary.

Duties include patrolling and observing beach to ensure appropriate use by patrons, enforcing beach regulations, and responding to emergency situations. Work is performed independently in accordance with established procedures, and is subject to review through visual observation and inspection by a supervisor. This Recruitment will close Friday, February 20, 2026 at 5:00PM.

Responsibilities
  • Patrolling, observing, and supervising the beach and surrounding areas to ensure the safety of all users; enforcing beach safety regulations and department policies and procedures to prevent accidents and maintain order.
  • Taking charge in response to emergency situations and assisting or rescuing swimmers in distress utilizing established rescue techniques.
  • Administering first aid for cuts or other injuries and applying CPR/CPR methods as necessary.
  • Reporting emergencies to supervisor and assisting in in-service staff trainings and safety drills.
  • Assisting in in-service training sessions on the use of emergency and first-aid equipment.
  • Monitoring beach conditions and informing guests of current swimming conditions, including but not limited to temperatures, wind conditions, and sea and barometer readings.
  • Performing custodial services to maintain clean and orderly emergency vehicles, headquarters, lifeguard towers, and surrounding areas including locker rooms, bathrooms, and offices.
  • Ensuring that benches and other movable equipment are kept at assigned locations; answering inquiries from beach patrons.
  • Maintaining, repairing, and inspecting rescue and emergency life support equipment; assisting in the installation of buoys and painting machinery and equipment to prevent rust.
  • Compiling, recording, and maintaining simple data (attendance figures, safety checklists, incident reports) and ensuring accuracy and timely forwarding of reports to the supervisor.
  • May require periodic physical fitness examinations and medical check-ups to ensure continued eligibility in the classification; performs other related work as required.
Qualifications

A high school diploma or its equivalent and six (6) months experience as a lifeguard. Beach or ocean lifeguard experience is preferred. A State of Florida Department of Health Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification is highly desirable.

OR An equivalent combination of education and experience beyond a high school diploma or its equivalent and six (6) months of the required experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Applicants must be 18 years of age at time of application.
  • Must be able to pass the City of Miami’s performance test, which may include swimming, running, and simulated rescue exercises.
  • Additionally, the following certificates must be possessed at time of application and maintained current throughout employment:
    Lifeguard Training, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.
  • A Valid Driver's License from any state (Equivalent to a State of Florida Class

    E) may be utilized upon application; however prior to appointment a State of Florida Driver's License (Class E or higher) must be presented and maintained current throughout employment.
  • A First Responder Certificate or an Emergency Medical Response Certification issued by the American Red Cross or other nationally recognized certifying agency must be obtained within the first 30 days of employment and maintained current throughout employment in the classification.
  • Special Notes:
    Employees in this classification will be required to work various shifts, including nights, holidays, and weekends. Employees will be required to work a minimum of 20 hours per biweekly pay period. Candidates will be subject to a Level II background screening.
