Position Description

This role provides social services to assist in the rehabilitation of juvenile law offenders in custody or on probation. Incumbents make recommendations for actions involving formulation of rehabilitation plans and treatment of offenders, including conditional release, education and employment stipulations. The occupation will coordinate work, supervise employees, assign tasks, review progress, and assess performance. Majority of time is spent communicating with, motivating, training, and evaluating employees, and directing their work.

Duties

and Responsibilities
  • Case Management/Reviews – Screening & Intake Process:
    Assign tasks to staff based on inquiry from youth, family, victims, law enforcement, the courts, or from department staff, as needed.
  • Assign cases to staff when referrals received by the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice (FDJJ).
  • Conduct case reviews to ensure home and school visits are integral to assigned case activities for information gathering and family engagement.
  • Initiate contact with the youth, family, victim, and law enforcement regarding case handling and disposition, when necessary.
  • Use Motivational Interviewing to engage the youth, family, and staff to determine needs.
  • Review cases within timelines and methods defined by policy, procedures and administrative rules, ensuring collateral information such as abuse and neglect history, educational, mental health, substance use, gang activity, and other pertinent info from agencies is gathered.
  • Review documentation of detention screening, intake screening, and risk and needs assessments (e.g., Suicide Risk Screening Instrument, and department approved risk/needs screening/assessment instruments) to ensure proper administration and identification of risk/protective factors.
  • Facilitate completion of assessments and, if results indicate need for services, ensure staff refer the youth and family to services regardless of legal status, including assisting staff with accessing services or resources when the youth or family refuses services.
  • Formulate case management strategies with assigned staff based on assessments and/or information to address youth’s specific needs.
  • Ensure service referrals were made to appropriate providers and follow-up actions were taken by staff.
  • Approve supervision and treatment recommendations to the State Attorney and other judicial partners to provide the most appropriate services in the least intrusive manner.
  • Confirm that staff have discussed with the youth and family a safety plan focusing on averting exposure to risk, harm or injury.
  • Review and/or approve screening instruments and reports used by the Department and/or the courts (e.g., DRAI, SRSI, department approved risk/needs screening/assessment instrument, case plan, Pre-Post Disposition Report, Adult Sentencing Summary Report, Progress Status Report, Electronic Commitment Packet, Termination of Supervision).
  • Provide technical assistance and conduct case reviews with staff to determine applicable case management intervention strategies.
Case Management / Reviews – Court Process
  • Act as the DJJ representative during court hearings, testifying to the court as needed to support recommendations for the youth, family, and community.
  • Collaborate with staff so that recommendations are based on information gathered during screening, assessment, intake and supervision to represent a balanced and restorative justice approach.
