Journeyman level mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of diversified heavy automotive equipment for the Fire‑Rescue Department of the City of Miami.

Work involves the skilled repair, maintenance and servicing of a wide variety of both conventional and specialized equipment and motorized machinery. The work requires the use of standard and specialized automotive mechanics’ tools, shop equipment, gauges and machinery. Work assignments are received from a Heavy Equipment Mechanic Supervisor, either orally or in writing, and may include assisting in diagnosing the type or extent of work to be performed.

Responsibilities include performing the actual repair, servicing or maintenance work; conducting physical tests or checks to ensure that the work has been completed satisfactorily; and documenting repair information and notes in the Fleet Management System (FASTER WEB). Supervision is received in progress and upon completion, and may include supervising Heavy Equipment Mechanic Helpers.

• Diagnose, adjust, repair and service a wide variety of light, medium and heavy‑duty automotive equipment and fire apparatuses.
• Diagnose, adjust, repair and overhaul motors of a wide range of automotive fire equipment and make tuning adjustments necessary to ensure ease of starting and effective operation for long periods of uninterrupted service.
• Repair, overhaul and maintain specialized equipment on pumping, ladder and other automotive fire equipment including pumps, valves, power take‑offs, hydraulic systems and steering mechanisms; repair and build special bodies.
• Overhaul and service assemblies and accessories such as single and two‑speed rear axles, multi‑speed transmissions (from one to ten speeds), Allison automatic transmissions and hydraulic, compressed air, vacuum and electric controls, systems and components.
• Change tires, including mounting and dismounting tires from rims, and repair flats on a variety of heavy automotive equipment.
• Operate various types of shop equipment, machinery, precision instruments, specialized tools and devices such as dynamo meters, boring bars, valve refacing and reseating equipment, micrometers, dial gauges, wheel alignment gauges, clutch cover assembly devices, power saws, grinders, drill presses, lathes, oxy‑acetylene and electric welding equipment, A/C recovery machines, electrical multi‑meters, and diagnostic computers.
• Conduct tests to locate defects in operation and check repairs before returning equipment back to service.
• May supervise unskilled workers.
• Make road calls to service equipment in the field.

• Perform other related work as required.
• High school diploma or its equivalent or completion of a training program at the high school or vocational level in the area of automotive or heavy equipment mechanics; or three (3) current Automotive Services Excellence (ASE) or automotive manufacturer certificates in varied automotive specialties, plus two (2) years in automotive mechanic experience, including one (1) year in the maintenance and repair of heavy automotive equipment.
• OR must obtain a valid State of Florida Commercial Driver’s License (Class B) or higher prior to the completion of the probationary period and must maintain it valid while employed in the classification.

• Proof of education:
  High School Diploma or its equivalent, completion of a training program at the high school or vocational level in the area of Automotive Mechanics or heavy equipment mechanics.
• OR a minimum of three (3) current ASE certificates.
• OR automotive manufacturer certificates in a varied automotive repair specialties.
