Position: Heavy Equipment Diesel Mechanic (Field)

Overview

Dobbs Equipment, LLC is seeking an experienced Field Service Technician. The role involves repair, diagnosis, overhaul, and reconditioning maintenance of customer and company heavy equipment and components. Depending on location and assignment, the technician will be responsible for some or all listed duties. Repairs may require working hours beyond the normal schedule for emergency calls or routine service.

Responsibilities
  • Follow safety rules and regulations to maintain a safe work environment and safe work habits.
  • Read job orders and observe equipment in operation to determine malfunctions and plan work procedures.
  • Install fuel injection nozzles and pumps, replace or recharge batteries, and replace transmissions, hydraulic systems, and component parts.
  • Inspect protective guards, loose bolts, and safety devices; make adjustments as needed.
  • Communicate shortages and malfunctions to the Service Manager.
  • Lubricate moving parts and operate repaired equipment to verify conformance to specifications.
  • Fabricate lifting or towing attachments, hydraulic systems, shields, or other devices per blueprints or schematic drawings.
  • Remove, replace, and repair tires, undercarriages, and earth-moving and timber harvesting attachments.
  • Maintain records for time, parts, work orders, and supplies used in repairs and servicing equipment.
  • Report to the Service Manager any additional work needed to ensure proper operation and safety.
  • Maintain and care for shop tools and equipment; ensure work is performed safely.
  • Review schematics to determine operating specifications and evaluation requirements.
  • Continue revenue-producing work as needed; test units for conformance with operating requirements (e.g., horsepower, lifting performance).
  • Ensure that new and used equipment is in good working condition; maintain service vehicle cleanliness and maintenance.
  • Participate in service training programs for skill development; represent the dealership professionally.
  • Arrive to work on time and adhere to scheduled hours; be able to work up to 12-hour days, varying shifts, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Operate company vehicles in compliance with state safety laws.
Qualifications
  • Valid Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
  • Knowledge of industrial equipment maintenance and operation; ability to perform basic repairs using technical manuals.
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment safely.
Education, Skills, and Experience
  • Associate degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school or a minimum of 2 years related experience (preferred).
  • Stay current with technical changes; proficient knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Maintains current product knowledge of John Deere and competitive products.
  • Forklift certification (preferred).
  • Effective communication, strong problem-solving, excellent time management, self-motivation, and a flexible schedule (including occasional overtime).
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules and operating/maintenance instructions; document diagnoses and work performed.
  • Disassembly, assembly, and repair of components and machines; basic arithmetic skills; quick learner with problem-solving ability.
  • Overnight travel less than 5% (training); bilingual abilities are a plus.
Work Environment

Works in a service field setting with exposure to varying temperatures, noise, fumes, dust, and moving mechanical parts.

Physical Demands

Must be able to wear PPE and perform tasks requiring climbing, lifting (50–75 lbs), and full range of motion; vision and hearing abilities as required for the role.
