To learn how to apply for a faculty or staff position, please review this .The Ocean Science Department at the Roenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric & Earth Science at the University of Miami has an exciting full time position for an Assistant Scientist.
The Assistant Scientist supports long-term, NSF-funded ocean biogeochemistry programs by leading essential laboratory operations and high-precision chemical analyses. The position ensures continuity of the Dissolved Organic Carbon Consensus Reference Material (DOC-CRM) program and supports NSF GO-SHIP observational commitments. In addition to technical responsibilities, the Assistant Scientist contributes to data interpretation and peer-reviewed publications.
Key Responsibilities
• Conduct high-temperature combustion analyses of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and total nitrogen (TN) using Shimadzu TOC-L systems
• Maintain analytical systems, troubleshoot instrumentation, and ensure rigorous data quality standards
• Prepare, quality-control, and distribute DOC and TN consensus reference materials (CRM) used by the national and international oceanographic community
• Coordinate shipboard seawater collections as Chief-Scientist, sample handling, and contamination-sensitive laboratory protocols
• Coordinate with external expert laboratories for consensus analyses
• Support NSF GO-SHIP repeat hydrographic section requirements for DOC and TN measurements
• Contribute to data analysis, interpretation, and co-authorship of peer-reviewed manuscripts
• Assist with documentation, reporting, and communication related to federally funded projects
Required Qualifications
• PhD in oceanography, marine chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, or a closely related field
• At least 1 year of demonstrated experience with laboratory-based chemical analyses and data quality control
• At least 1 year of experience working with large observational or analytical databases
• Ability to manage complex, long-term scientific operations with minimal supervision
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in organic chemistry, particularly as applied to natural waters
• Experience with DOC and/or TDN analysis
• Familiarity with federally funded or multi-institutional research programs
