The Surgery department has an exciting opportunity for a Scientist, SOM position. The incumbent supports the University’s research goals and objectives by engaging in complex experiments and investigations in a range of areas, depending on specialty and interests. Moreover, an employee in this position contributes to the scientific community and promotes the University’s reputation as a leader in the field.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS- Oversees research employees, students, and other relevant staff.
- Authors scientific publications, technical and agency reports, and patent applications.
- Assists in the development of training materials for research staff.
- Plans experiments and records and analyzes findings.
- Prepares research proposals and funding applications.
- Ensures that all activities are in compliance with applicable quality and regulatory standards.
- Maintains current knowledge of relevant scientific and technical developments.
- Presents ongoing work and findings to colleagues at academic conferences.
- Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS- Ph.D., M.D. or other doctoral level degree required
- Minimum 10 years of relevant experience
- Animal handling & surgery
- Mastery of rodent handling techniques (restraint, injection, anesthesia).
- Independent performance of tumor inoculation, surgical resections, and post‑op monitoring.
- Ability to adapt and learn new techniques.
- Genotyping & colony management
- DNA extraction, PCR‑based genotyping, record‑keeping for breeding schedules and Mendelian ratios.
- PDX library & database organization
- Cataloging PDX models, linking tumor and clinical metadata, maintaining secure and searchable records (e.g. REDCap, Lab Key).
- Cell line derivation & characterization
- Establishment of patient‑derived cell cultures, sterility verification, and routine mycoplasma testing.
- Assessment of DNA damage repair protein levels via blotting or immunofluorescence.
- Genomic & pharmacologic assays
- Preparation of sequencing libraries; coordination with core facilities or in‑house platforms.
- Execution of high‑throughput drug sensitivity screens; data normalization and curve fitting in Graph Pad Prism or R.
- Administrative & compliance tasks
- Drafting and updating IACUC protocols, amendments, and annual reviews.
- Ensuring laboratory SOPs and training records are current.
- Communication & collaboration
- Clear oral and written reporting of methods, results, and protocol changes.
- Ability to work across basic‑science and clinical‑research teams.
- Honest and integrity in collection and reporting of data.
- Detail‑oriented & organized:
Meticulous record‑keeping, inventory management, and protocol adherence. - Proactive learner:
Eagerness to master new techniques (e.g. grant writing, advanced molecular assays) under mentorship. - Ethical & compassionate:
