General Summary
The Stormwater Laborer performs manual and semi-skilled work related to the maintenance and repair of the Town’s stormwater drainage systems. Duties include assisting with the cleaning, inspection, and repair of storm drains, culverts, swales, pipes, retention areas, and other stormwater infrastructure. Work is performed under the direction of the Field Supervisor and Director.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISEDThis is a full-time position, working 40 hours weekly and reports directly to the Utilities and Stormwater Director.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Assist with the cleaning and maintenance of storm drains, catch basins, culverts, manholes, and outfalls.
- Perform manual labor including digging, debris removal, vegetation trimming, and site restoration.
- Help operate tools and equipment such as shovels, rakes, weed trimmers, pumps, chainsaws, and pressure hoses.
- Assist with the operation of vacuum trucks, jetting equipment, and pump systems under supervision.
- Remove blockages and debris from drainage structures to ensure proper water flow.
- Set up work zones including cones, signs, and traffic control devices.
- Clean, maintain, and perform basic inspections of equipment and tools.
- Assist in erosion control efforts, swale grading, and maintenance of retention ponds.
- Follow all safety procedures, including confined space entry, flood response, and equipment safety.
- Perform basic record-keeping related to work performed or materials used.
- Respond to after-hours emergencies such as flooding or blocked drains when required.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or Equivalent.
- Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to pass required safety and equipment training.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and or ability required.
- Ability to perform heavy physical labor for extended periods and in all weather conditions, including wet or flooded environments.
- Basic understanding of stormwater systems preferred but not required.
- Ability to learn and safely use hand tools, power tools, and stormwater maintenance equipment.
- Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team.
- Knowledge of workplace safety, traffic control, and proper use of personal protective equipment.
- Willingness to be trained in confined space entry, pump equipment operation, erosion control, and stormwater system maintenance.
Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions, including rain and high heat.
Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting to 75 lbs., digging, climbing, and operation of tools and equipment.
Exposure to water, mud, insects, wildlife, traffic, and hazards associated with field and stormwater maintenance operations.
