This is a part-time position responsible for assisting with the care and maintenance of natural areas and areas designated as City of Miami Natural Forest Communities. Work involves assisting with exotic plant species removal, ecosystem restoration activities, and trimming and removing trees in order to advance efforts of restoration, conservation and stewardship by the Natural Areas Division of the Parks and Recreation Department.
An incumbent will also be responsible for planting trees, cutting grass, removing weeds, raking, and trash collection. General supervision is received from the Senior Park Naturalist or designee.
- Restore and enhance natural areas through propagating, trimming, cutting, planting, transplanting, and fertilizing different shrubs, flowers, and plants, as instructed, through established guidelines and procedures.
- Drive pickup trucks with trailer and motorized carts; operate hand mowers, riding mowers, edge trimmers, edgers, and related equipment for park maintenance.
- Operate hand and power spray equipment to control growth, disease and insects in grasses and shrubs.
- Assist in maintaining a list of different varieties and species in natural areas.
- Assist with propagation and re-establishment of native material for use in other parks and public areas.
- Conduct hands-on exotic removal as required by project needs and timeline.
- Perform maintenance and light cleaning such as picking up trash, pulling weeds, sweeping and mopping, and basic restroom tidying.
- Perform minor repairs on equipment used in parks and other related work as required.
- Work in outdoor environments and follow safety guidelines in all activities.
- High school diploma and six (6) months of experience in farming, horticulture, landscaping, nursery, or related activities, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid Driver's License from any state; equivalent to a State of Florida Class
E. A Florida Driver's License (Class E or higher) must be presented before appointment and maintained throughout employment. - Previous experience in maintenance, enhancement and restoration of natural areas is preferred.
- Employees may be required to work various shifts, including nights, holidays, and weekends.
- Candidates will be subject to a Level II background screening.
