Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) – Full Time
The University of Miami’s Department of Pediatrics, School Health Initiative offers an exciting opportunity for a Full‑Time Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to work at various school locations in Miami‑Dade County. The LPN administers nursing care under the supervision of a registered nurse and ensures the health, comfort, and safety of students.
About the RoleThe incumbent provides quality care to designated patients and performs a range of responsibilities including planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care, and collaborating with nursing, medical, and other hospital staff.
Core Responsibilities- Collects patient assessment data and notifies the appropriate nurse of actual or potential problems and needs on an ongoing basis.
- Records patient information concisely, accurately, and completely.
- Administers medications and performs treatments and procedures for all patients as assigned.
- Assists with preparation of patient materials or correspondence used by RNs, ARNPs, or MDs to communicate with organizations.
- Assists in pre‑operative and post‑operative health teaching for patients and families.
- Shares responsibility for the planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care plans.
- Participates in team conferences, sharing knowledge, information, and ideas with team members.
- Performs more‑complex nursing activities as competence increases.
- Communicates frequently with the team leader regarding patients’ physical and mental conditions.
- Adheres to University and unit‑level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
- Provides first aid, follow‑up assessments, and direct practical nursing care to students according to established clinic protocols.
- Responds to students’ health emergencies and performs care following standing orders within the constraints of Florida Statute for LPNs.
- Manages and updates student health records and emergency information, inputting necessary documents into the appropriate databases.
- Administers medications, treatments, and coordinates care plans for students with medical needs, documenting in clinic databases as necessary.
- Ensures vaccination compliance and communicates with parents/guardians on required health matters.
- Maintains clinic inventory, assists with medical supply preparation and orders, discarding expired supplies, and adheres to infection control standards.
- Coordinates mandated health screenings and informs caregivers of results.
- Collaborates consistently with school staff and team leaders to promote health, safety, and effective care delivery.
- Ensures a clean, organized clinic environment and reports any equipment or facility issues to the appropriate department and leadership.
- Participates in school events and/or team conferences, including those outside regular school hours.
- Assists with preparation of medical supplies, documentation, and communication needed in collaboration with student RNs, APRNs, or MDs.
- Adheres to University policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
- Provides other duties of school health as assigned.

Core Qualifications- High School Diploma or equivalent, relevant experience, certification, or license.
- Valid State of Florida LPN license required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
- Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
- Ability to work during school hours.
- Must be available to participate in school‑related events and team conferences, including evenings and weekends.
- Learning agility: ability to learn new procedures, technologies, and protocols, and adapt to changing priorities and work demands.
- Teamwork: ability to work collaboratively with others and contribute to a team environment.
- Technical proficiency: skilled in using office software, technology, and relevant computer applications.
- Communication: strong and clear written and verbal communication skills for interacting with colleagues and stakeholders.
