Director, Finance – Research Administration

The incumbent acts as principal advisor regarding all financial matters that may affect the short-term or long-term financial success of the University. This role oversees the development, implementation, and administration of internal controls and operating systems, and establishes financial policies in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, tax regulations, and existing federal and state laws.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Oversee budgets and audit processes for all facilities and provide appropriate training to management.
  • Communicate financial policies and matters to appropriate finance committees.
  • Advance annual, operating, and capital budgets.
  • Prepare appropriate financial reports necessary to show overall financial performance.
  • Assist in the development of strategies to maintain the financial well‑being of the organization.
  • Determine economic implications and feasibility for modifications to existing systems and installation of new systems.
  • Provide financial analyses, feasibility studies, and other data to translate strategic plan into quantifiable information.
  • Cultivate and maintain payer contract relationships and develop joint venture and collaborative arrangements with external parties.
  • Invest excess short‑term and long‑term cash and investment portfolios to maximize returns while maintaining safety.
  • Ensure employees are trained on controls within the function and on University policy and procedures.
  • Establish and continuously assess the effectiveness of internal controls within the unit and compliance with University policies and procedures.
CORE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Minimum 8 years of relevant experience.
DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM

Oversees all administrative and financial aspects of research within the department, including oversight of the entire department research portfolio (Basic Science, Clinical and Translational Research). This position will oversee all Research Administrative Services Support, including Clinical Trials units, and provide financial operational and administrative oversight of all Research Services in alignment with collaborative SCCC and MTI research teams. Responsibilities include coordinating development of department‑specific research policies and procedures, maintaining systems to support research coordination, managing and tracking the progression of strategic objectives, assisting in planning and completing new research proposals, ensuring accuracy of research effort tracking, and collaborating with department leadership to advocate for optimal, cost‑effective access to research services.

DEPARTMENT

SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of business and management principles.
  • Ability to direct, manage, implement, and evaluate department operations.
  • Ability to establish department goals and objectives that support the strategic plan.
  • Ability to effectively plan, delegate, and/or supervise the work of others.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, develop, and train others.
