Data Scientist 3, Full Time – Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami

The University of Miami, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, offers an exciting full‑time opportunity for a Data Scientist 3 in the Department of Research in Miami, Florida. The role requires a subject‑matter expert in leveraging large data sets to identify opportunities for product and process optimization, develop models, and provide data‑based insights to influence stakeholders and functional teams.

Core Job Functions
  • Collaborates with stakeholders to identify opportunities for leveraging data to drive business solutions.
  • Leads the development of a state‑of‑the‑art data portal for the storage, management and analysis of multidimensional datasets.
  • Builds pipelines and workflows to integrate publicly available datasets with the infrastructure.
  • Manages project delivery of the Data Portal and other tools, coordinating technical specifications and user feedback.
  • Develops computational algorithms and workflows for identification of novel targets using big‑data and AI approaches.
  • Mining and analysis of data from company databases to optimize product development, marketing, and business strategies.
  • Assesses effectiveness and accuracy of new data sources and gathering techniques.
  • Develops custom data models and algorithms to apply to datasets.
  • Uses predictive modeling to enhance customer experiences, operational efficiencies, and other business outcomes.
  • Leads functional teams to implement models and monitor outcomes.
  • Creates processes and tools to monitor model performance and data accuracy.
  • Adheres to University and unit‑level policies and safeguards University assets.

Core Qualifications

Education: Doctorate degree in a relevant field (required).

Experience: Minimum 7 years of relevant experience.

Certification and Licensing: Refer to Department Description for applicable certification requirements.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Technical Proficiency – skilled in using office software, technology, and relevant computer applications.

Department‑Specific Functions Development and optimization of AI models for diagnosis

Lead the development, training and deployment of advanced deep‑learning models for ocular disease diagnosis, improving accuracy and accessibility of clinical tools.

Big data integration and processing

Coordinate management, curation and analysis of large‑scale multimodal datasets (OCT, fundus, slit lamp) to ensure data quality and readiness for machine‑learning pipelines.

Applied image enhancement for clinical utility

Implement and supervise advanced image‑processing and quality‑enhancement workflows to maximize diagnostic reliability and algorithm performance.

Collaboration and team leadership

Coordinate cross‑functional teams of fellows, researchers, healthcare professionals and data scientists integrating AI solutions into clinical and research settings while mentoring junior scientists.

Innovation in computational methods

Apply and adapt big‑data analysis techniques, large‑language models and specialized machine‑learning models to identify novel diagnostic opportunities and improve workflow efficiency.
