The Counseling and Psychology Services Department is currently seeking a Temporary Post-Doctoral Psychology Fellow to join their team of professionals.
Core Elements of the Post-Doctoral FellowshipThis is designed to reflect APPIC guidelines and provide structured generalist training. The fellow will integrate theoretical orientation, research literature, and ethical/legal issues into the conceptualization and provision of clinical services. Core training experiences include individual, couples, and/or group therapy, initial assessment or triage services/crisis intervention, outreach, and consultation. At least 50% of the fellow's time is spent in direct professional, clinical, and related services.
MulticulturalCompetence
CAPS clinical/administrative staff are committed to serving all students and advancing CAPS' mission of facilitating students’ personal learning, emotional well-being, and academic skills development. Trainees will develop awareness and skills to adapt evidence-based clinical interventions to the individual contexts and lived experiences of students seeking services.
Psychotherapy:Individual, Couples, and/or Group Counseling
CAPS provides individual, couples, and group therapy as well as workshops to enrolled FIU students. Treatments are time-limited and individualized. Client presenting problems range from developmental and transient issues to characterological disorders, including anxiety, mood disorders, phobias, relationship concerns, self-esteem issues, adjustment, academic problems, identity-related issues, family conflicts, and health and wellness concerns.
Delivery and SupervisionCAPS staff use brief treatment methods for individual and couples therapy. Licensed psychologists are on-site during scheduled hours and are available remotely when needed. The fellow should establish a theoretical orientation and may explore new perspectives. The fellow may co-facilitate a group with a licensed clinician. CAPS offers groups such as interpersonal process, CBT/exposure therapy, and psycho educational groups.
Access Consultation/Crisis InterventionThe fellow will provide weekly access consultation and crisis intervention to the FIU community, evaluating needs and making recommendations. Case disposition and triage are typically done with the supervisor, with increasing autonomy as competence grows.
Outreach & ConsultationThe fellow will deliver psycho educational seminars to FIU students as needed and may develop seminars based on expertise. The fellow will participate in outreach planning meetings and may engage with CAPS-administered outreach programs. The program offers opportunities to provide professional consultation to university departments.
Psychological AssessmentFellows refine assessment skills, administering and interpreting psycho educational instruments. Depending on experience, fellows may conduct psycho educational intakes, administer tests, participate in training seminars, and coordinate testing for FIU athletes. Opportunities may include presenting assessment seminars and consulting with the Disability Resource Center (DRC).
SupervisionThe supervision model is developmental, with at least two hours per week of in-person individual supervision, provided by the primary supervisor and sometimes an additional supervisor. Fellows also participate in trainee group supervision and supervisor-led group therapy. Access/consultation supervision occurs as part of the access team.
