The Operating Room Technician demonstrates knowledge of surgical instruments and principles of sterile technique. The Technician anticipates the needs of the surgical suite, adheres to hospital policies, and collaborates with the surgical team to improve customer satisfaction.
Major Responsibilities- Assemble supplies and equipment for surgical procedures.
- Prepare sterile instrument table and gather equipment for cleaning and sterilization after procedures.
- Accurately complete sponge, sharp, and instrument counts and report discrepancies to the nurse or surgeon.
- Position patient according to type of surgery.
- Prepare patient skin for surgery in accordance with hospital standards.
- Provide comfort and support to pre‑operative patients.
- Transport patients to and from the surgical suite.
- Assist the surgical team in procedures, including passing instruments, sponges, and sutures.
- Clean and prepare room between procedures and after the last case; restock supplies and organize effectively for end‑of‑case cleanup.
- Maintain a safe work area.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Practice and adhere to the “Code of Conduct” and “Mission and Value Statement.”
- Maintain aseptic techniques and actively monitor situations that could breach aseptic technique.
- Handle specimens properly: identify specimens with the physician, maintain them during the procedure, and check with the surgeon before passing.
- Obtain specific supplies and non‑narcotic medications: check preference cards before case and arrange special supplies.
- Minimum high school diploma or equivalent.
- Operating Room Scrub Technician Certification (CST) preferred.
- Completion of an accredited Surgical Scrub Technician Program or experience working as a scrub tech.
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification (must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date).
