Position: Inpatient Coder 1

Summary

HIM Inpatient Coder 1 is responsible for reviewing the clinical documentation in inpatient records to accurately assign and sequence ICD‑9 (where applicable) and ICD‑10 diagnostic and procedure codes. Coding is used for reimbursement and data collection.

Responsibilities
  • Code inpatient medical records using ICD‑9 and/or ICD‑10.
  • Ensure accounts are coded correctly to provide an accurate MS‑DRG or APR‑DRG for reimbursement.
  • Complete coding within 4 days of the patient discharge date, meeting productivity standards per AHIMA Guidelines.
  • Verify patient information, identify discrepancies, and ensure all codes are assigned to the correct encounter.
  • Serve as a quality reviewer; identify documents not belonging to the patient or the correct encounter.
  • Use appropriate modifiers accurately.
  • Query physicians for additional information when needed to clarify diagnoses, symptoms, or services provided, following Coding Guidelines and Coding Clinics.
  • Ensure all codes reflect the care rendered, supporting patient safety, accurate data retrieval, and proper reimbursement.
  • Report unusual circumstances or risk factors to the Coding Associate Administrator or Coding Director.
  • Maintain continuing education requirements from AHIMA and/or AAPC to keep certification and competency current.
  • Participate in all ICD‑10‑CM‑PCS education sessions provided by JHS and approved external trainings.
  • Demonstrate competency based on education received.
  • Adhere to Standards of Excellence, respect privacy and confidentiality per HIPAA and applicable laws, and uphold the CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Expertise).
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Experience

Generally requires 0 to 3 years of related experience.

Education

High School diploma required.

  • Understand and follow instructions.
  • Exercise sound and independent judgment.

Credentials

Employees hired after June 2015 must be credentialed with an HIM/Coding credential and/or certification from AHIMA or AAPC.

Physical Requirements

Job function is sedentary; requires extended sitting and frequent standing or walking. Must lift up to 20 pounds and have close visual acuity for computer use and data analysis. Reasonable accommodations available.

Environmental Conditions

Fast‑paced environment with occasional high‑pressure situations. Interaction with diverse populations including team members, providers, patients, insurance companies, and the public. Subject to indoor and occasional outdoor conditions, including exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous substances. PPE such as gloves or mask may be required. Reasonable accommodations available.
