Ophthalmic Technician 1 – Full Time – Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Miami, FL
University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for an Ophthalmic Technician 1 with Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida. The position requires competency in the theory, principles, and practice of eye care. The role is responsible for performing appropriate clinical testing in compliance with department standards and documenting in the electronic medical record.
Core Job Functions- Provides support to providers which includes documentation in patient charts as required and directed for patient care.
- Provides patient‑centric care.
- Adheres to University of Miami policies, standards, values, and required training.
- Complies with regulations and maintains patient confidentiality.
- Follows best practices of patient safety, hand hygiene, and infection control.
- Attends educational courses for ophthalmic personnel when assigned.
- Demonstrates high quality of work through accuracy, timeliness, professionalism, and thoroughness.
- Meets daily productivity goals.
- Ensures all equipment is calibrated and instrumentation is in proper working order.
- Participates in assigned clinical research and maintains required certifications.
- Organizes and stocks rooms for daily clinical activities.
- Travels to satellite eye centers when necessary.
- Works evenings and weekends as needed.
- Performs organizational duties as assigned.
- Completes IVI (intravitreal injection) prep for patients.
- Facilitates motility exams.
- Supports Virtual Care encounters and exams.
- Performs and documents the following items in the electronic medical record:
- Reason for visit
- Tangent screen visual fields
- Chief complaint
- Basic ocular motility
- History of present illness
- Pupillary evaluation
- Basic review of systems
- Ocular surface assessment
- Review systemic and ocular medications
- Eye drop administration
- Record allergies
- Intraocular pressure such as Goldman, Tono‑Pen, and I‑Care
- Pharmacy information
- Pachymetry
- Family, social, medical, and ocular history
- Insertion and removal of hard & soft contact lenses
- Visual acuity at distance and near
- Color vision test
- Lensometry
- Stereopsis test
- Manual refraction
- Sensorimotor exam
- Confrontational fields
- Automated & manual perimetry
- Humphrey visual fields
- Virtual Reality (VR) visual fields
- Amsler Grid visual fields
- Education: High School diploma or equivalent
- Experience: 1 year of relevant experience

- Displays basic knowledge of ocular anatomy, function, and motility.
- Demonstrates ability to perform the appropriate patient work‑up using the EMR telehealth platform.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office.
