Core

Job Summary

The Phlebotomist 1 draws and collects blood samples from patients, verifies records, and prepares specimens for laboratory analysis. The incumbent also collects vitals, conducts brief interviews, and interacts with patients in a caring and respectful manner while using laboratory and hospital systems for accessioning and data entry.

Core Job Functions
  • Perform patient phlebotomy by prescribed techniques outlined in the phlebotomy procedure manual.
  • Prioritize hematology and oncology patients.
  • Work on pre‑accession specimens, matching and organizing orders and labels for the day.
  • Follow patient identification processes.
  • Answer questions and resolve problems related to test requisitions, specimen requirements, test additions, priority changes, and patient results.
  • Maintain adequate inventory levels as per protocol and rotate previous stock.
  • Maintain required files and log systems in a neat and accurate manner.
  • Assist supervisor in recording statistics and generating reports.
  • Process cancellations, credits, and additions of test procedures.
  • Adhere to University and unit‑level policies and procedures and safeguard University assets.
Education
  • High School Diploma or equivalent/relevant experience, certification or license.
Experience
  • Minimum 1 year of relevant experience required.
Certification and Licensing
  • Applicable certification (e.g., Certified Phlebotomy Technician).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Learning Agility:
    Ability to learn new procedures, technologies, and protocols, and adapt to changing priorities and work demands.
  • Teamwork:
    Ability to work collaboratively with others and contribute to a team environment.
  • Technical Proficiency:
    Skilled in using office software, technology, and relevant computer applications.

    Strong and clear written and verbal communication skills for interacting with colleagues and stakeholders.
