Summary of DutiesSurgical technologists, also called scrubs and operating room technicians, assist in surgical operations under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, or other surgical personnel. They are members of operating room teams that typically include surgeons, anesthesiologists, and circulating nurses.
Education, Experience & Requirements- A graduate of an accredited surgical technologist program.
- Must be certified to perform CPR with 0‑2 years of clinical experience in a related field.
- Prepares and maintains medical equipment for surgical procedures.
- Before an operation, prepares the operating room by setting up surgical instruments, sterile drapes, and solutions.
- Follows hospital regulations and industry procedures during pre‑operation procedures.
- Performs pre‑operation preparations to the patient’s skin, body, and medical equipment.
- Assembles sterile and non‑sterile equipment, checks that it works properly.
- Gets patients ready for surgery by washing, shaving, and disinfecting incision sites.
- Transports patients to the operating room, helps position them on the table and covers them with sterile drapes.
- Observes patients’ vital signs, checks charts, and assists the surgical team with sterile gowns and gloves.
- Passes instruments and supplies to surgeons and assistants.
- Handles retractors, cuts sutures, counts sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments; helps prepare, care for, and dispose of specimens; applies dressings.
- Operates sterilizers, lights, suction machines, and diagnostic equipment.
- After an operation, transfers patients to recovery and cleans/restocks the operating room.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Ability to be on feet for long periods and lift or turn disabled patients.
- Requires sitting and standing associated with a normal office environment.
- Ability to concentrate for up to four hours.
- Ability to communicate verbally in person and on the telephone.
- Ability to use a computer keyboard and view a monitor.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills needed to provide patient care appropriate to age.
- Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development across the lifespan and assesses patient needs by age.
- Demonstrates nursing process skills.
- Uses recognized communication channels.
- Maintains good interpersonal relationships with patients, co‑workers, and health team members.
