Job Description

Working in a highly collaborative environment, this job involves a wide variety of incident investigations, including accident reconstruction. Projects require fieldwork, investigation, analysis, product testing, report development and legal testimony. This position is intended for a human factors scientist or engineer who will apply human performance principles to real‑world environments, with a substantial focus on premises safety and slip, trip, and fall incident analysis.

The consultant will investigate how pedestrians perceive, interpret, and respond to features of the built environment, assess walkway and environmental conditions, and evaluate the influence of visibility, lighting, warnings, and decision‑making on incident outcomes.

The candidate will also conduct human factors‑related analyses involving consumer products, occupational tasks, transportation accidents, or warnings and instructions. The position includes both litigation support and non‑litigation consulting, such as safety and risk assessments, potential participation in safety standards activities, and involvement in research that advances best practices in human factors and safety.

The consultant will conduct field work, interpret incident‑related materials, and prepare clear, written and verbal technical reports. Prior expert testimony experience is desired. Work will include review of existing scientific literature and standards; and the performance or supervision of original research to obtain and analyze relevant technical data. The candidate will interface with internal ESi consultants and directly with clients, assessing client needs, establishing performance timelines, developing budgets, and explaining complex technical concepts in lay terms.

Key Responsibilities
  • Investigate slip, trip, and fall incidents by evaluating pedestrian behavior, walkway characteristics, environmental conditions, visibility, lighting, and warnings or instructions in settings such as retail, hospitality, and other public access areas.
  • Conduct field inspections and collect human‑factors‑relevant data such as tribometer‑based coefficient of friction…
