Fire Architect or Engineer Plans Examiner

Summary: This position involves responsible technical work in the inspection, enforcement, examination, review, and analysis of construction plans to ensure compliance with the Florida Building Code, Florida Fire Prevention Code, and other applicable fire and life safety codes and regulations.

Potential candidates in this classification perform evaluative work requiring skilled technical knowledge and professional judgment when examining plans, blueprints, workmanship, and specifications for new construction and existing buildings. Work includes office-based plan review, interaction with the public, and periodic field inspections to verify compliance between approved plans and actual construction. Work is reviewed through periodic conferences with the Fire Marshal, Deputy Fire Marshal, or designee.

This position is not routine or clerical in nature and requires the exercise of independent judgment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Examines plans, blueprints, tracings, sketches, and specifications prior to issuance of construction permits.
  • Approves or disapproves proposed plans in accordance with applicable codes and regulatory requirements; discusses disapproved items with architects, engineers, contractors, and/or owner-builders to obtain necessary revisions.
  • Performs complex inspections to determine compliance with fire and life safety standards, including occupancy classification, construction type, building height and area, hazardous materials and processes, fire separations, alarm and detection systems, means of egress, and fire suppression requirements.
  • Confers with developers, engineers, architects, and plan examiners during the preliminary planning phase of projects regarding fire and life safety compliance.
  • Assists Fire Inspectors with complex or controversial field inspections of new construction and existing buildings.
  • Maintains inspection and investigation records and prepares reports as required.
  • Attends meetings as a subject matter expert on behalf of the Fire Marshal, as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Possession of a degree in Engineering OR Architecture and two (2) years of experience preparing or reviewing life safety, fire protection, or fire alarm construction plans.
