Senior Consultant, Ports and Marine Civil/Structural Engineering
WSP USA is seeking a Senior Consultant, Ports and Marine Engineering to join our National Maritime Practice Group. This position can be based out of Irvine, CA;
San Diego, CA;
San Francisco, CA;
Miami, FL;
Portland, OR;
Seattle, WA; or Houston, TX.
This opportunity provides engineering support to other technical staff, engineers, and project managers for the development, design, construction, and/or inspection of structures and facilities for port, marine, and intermodal rail terminal projects in the public and private sectors. Facilities may include piers, wharves, port and upland marine terminals, seawalls/bulkheads, dry docks, marinas and other nearshore/offshore facilities. Deliver work products that meet or exceed industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.
YourImpact
- Provide leadership for engineering tasks including collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from the work site, surveys, technical reports and drawings, and other data matrices for project development, design, and construction.
- Lead development of construction plans and schedules, specifications, and cost estimates for ports and marine projects. Prepare and implement site safety activity plans and coordinate field work activities.
- Lead cross-functional teams to execute project work on mid‑level projects or multiple smaller projects, collaborating with other engineers and multi‑disciplinary teams on Federal, State, regional, and locally funded improvements and developments. Track budgets and milestone progress; support completion of Plans, Specifications and Estimate (PS&E) submissions.
- Write technical reports and document findings using sketches, calculations, spreadsheets, technical drawings, and engineering software (including SAP
2000 and similar FEM tools). - Apply higher-order engineering techniques to develop design requirements, incorporating marine-practice standards and specifications. Identify site, design and construction risks and provide mitigation solutions.
- Create finite element models for a range of fixed and floating marine structures subjected to gravity, live, environmental, and seismic loads.
- Prepare design documentation for steel and concrete components, deep foundation systems, and substructure/superstructure elements.
- Prepare project task budgets and schedules for review; prepare and present findings to internal teams and clients.
- Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients confidently and professionally.
- Conduct overwater and/or over-deck inspections of port terminals and visually assess condition of elements.
- Uphold ethical standards, comply with WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures; complete assigned trainings.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
- 5 to 7 years of relevant experience in marine project design (including rehabilitation and new design)
- EIT or similar certification/licensure
- Experience in analysis and design of marine projects; proficiency in SAP
2000 or equivalent FEM software; design and detailing of reinforced and prestressed concrete and steel per ACI, AISC, PCI, and/or AASHTO - Experience with AutoCAD and REVIT and other BIM tools
- Experience in ports and marine projects and ability to coordinate multi-disciplinary teams; knowledge of relevant design standards and practices
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to write technical reports
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team; strong attention to detail and multi-tasking
- Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to company safety policies
- Occasional travel may be required; ability to work schedules that extend beyond the typical workweek
- Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering from ABET-accredited program with 7+ years of post-education design experience in ports and marine structures
- Registered Professional Engineer licensure preferred
