Job Overview

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) delivers medical care to a wide variety of patients. The APP examines and treats patients independently and in collaboration with other health care professionals, ensuring proper illness and injury care and disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. May prescribe medications and order diagnostic tests. Advises patients about continuing care.

Responsibilities
  • Perform and document complete physical examinations and comprehensive health histories.
  • Functions independently to perform age‑appropriate history and physical for patients.
  • Orders and interprets diagnostic and therapeutic tests relative to the patient’s age‑specific needs.
  • Prescribes appropriate pharmacologic and non‑pharmacologic treatment modalities.
  • Implements interventions to support the patient to regain or maintain physiologic stability.
  • Assists with the provision of care in accordance with facility, state, and federal regulations.
  • Monitors the effectiveness of interventions.
  • Facilitates the patient’s transition within and between health care settings, e.g., admitting, transferring, and discharging patients.
  • Collaborates with multidisciplinary team members by making appropriate referrals.
  • Facilitates staff, patient, and family decision making by providing educational tools.
  • Adheres to University and unit‑level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
Clinical Activities (Ambulatory & Inpatient)
  • Assess the physical and psychosocial status of clients by means of interview, health history, physical examination, and diagnostic studies.
  • Recognize deviations from normal in the physical assessment and work in collaboration with a physician in formulating treatment plans for health problems and follow‑up.
  • Write prescriptions for medications and blood products based upon laboratory results, order and interpret routine diagnostic and follow‑up studies, therapeutic measures, and post‑discharge care in accordance with written practice protocols.
  • Request written consultation from physicians and other health‑care professionals to ensure appropriate and quality patient care.
  • Assess and follow consult patients when required and independently of physician when needed.
  • Interpret and evaluate findings of studies/tests and intervene accordingly.
  • Advise collaborating physician of appropriate information regarding patient care and report to the physician the actions provided to the patients.
  • Evaluate the quality of care provided and recommend changes for improvement.
  • Initiate appropriate actions to facilitate the implementation of therapeutic plans that are consistent with the continuing healthcare needs of the clients.
  • Answer patient‑related inquiries via all forms of telecommunication throughout the system (telephone, email, secure chat, in‑basket messaging, etc.).
  • Assist in the management of family dynamics and coping mechanisms during acute and chronic phases of patient care.
  • Conduct or participate in multidisciplinary rounds and ensure appropriate and quality care for patients.
  • Perform patient triage and determine the urgency of physician’s evaluation.
  • Provide symptom management for side effects related to hematologic oncologic treatment.
  • Assist with Peer‑to‑Peer authorizations and filling out medical forms for patients.
  • Ensure that the clinic runs smoothly and efficiently, corresponding with referring physicians and patients to provide adequate coordination of care to improve outcomes.
  • Perform bone marrow biopsies, lumbar punctures with IT chemo, Omaya reservoir access, PICC line removals, and skin biopsies if competency met.
  • Act as a preceptor for APP students, fellows, and new APP staff as appropriate.
Ambulatory

Specific Duties
  • Rotate with colleagues taking weekend and holiday call from Sylvester patients.
  • Respond to medical and oncologic emergencies in the CTU and clinics.
  • Communicate with triage nurses regarding patients who need to be added to OCC clinic for symptom management, evaluation, and treatment.
