Supports and advances the Department's mission of preventing loss of life or injury through the enforcement of laws and regulations governing fire safety, as well as the delivery of fire and life safety education to the University community.
- Inspects various occupancies for compliance with fire and life safety regulations.
- Receives and investigates complaints of fire hazards and alleged violations of fire regulations.
- Notifies occupants when deficiencies and/or code violations are found and makes recommendations on methods of correction and compliance.
- Keeps records of inspections and prepares reports.
- Examines plans, blueprints, tracings, sketches and specifications prior to issuance of construction permits in leased locations.
- Conducts presentations for the University community on various topics such as fire and life safety, hands-only CPR/first aid, evacuation training, fire extinguisher training, and fire drills.
- Provides fire and life safety guidance at special events.
- Liaises with various authorities to achieve a common goal and/or regulatory compliance, e.g., Florida State Fire Marshal's Office, Miami‑Dade Fire Rescue, City of Miami Fire Rescue, etc.
- Responds to emergencies within the University Community and liaises with other agencies as needed.
- Performs such other duties as directed by the Fire Code Administrator.
- Performs essential duties in any emergencies such as hurricanes, storms, and/or any other university emergency closing. The employee is expected to be available to report to work as needed during university emergency closing with appropriate notification of a department administrator.
- High school diploma and seven (7) years of appropriate experience. Associates degree in an appropriate specialization and four (4) years of appropriate experience. State of Florida Certification as a Fire Safety Inspector I.
- State of Florida Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician.
- State of Florida Certification as a Fire and Life Safety Educator.
- NFPA/Pro Board Certification as a Fire Plans Examiner I.
- American Heart Association Certification as a BLS Provider.
