SENIOR CLERK – F/C (CLASSIFICATION) – South Florida Reception Center, Classification Department.

Overview

Our mission in the Classification Department is to accurately assess and classify inmates based on their needs, risks, and behaviours. We ensure appropriate housing and program placements within the correctional system. Our goal is to enhance safety and security while promoting effective rehabilitation, ultimately aiding in the successful reintegration of inmates into society. This position is not a telework position and is required to report to the FDC office in the area it serves.

Job Duties
  • Prepare correspondence, memorandums, and type essential forms and documents.
  • Maintain inmate files, conduct audits on new inmates, and prepare necessary forms.
  • Input data into the CDC database, retrieve and print information, and maintain classification documentation.
  • Receive, date‑stamp, sort and distribute mail, and handle copying, scanning, and faxing of documents.
  • Provide top‑notch customer service by answering phone calls professionally, assisting inmate families, and taking on special projects and other clerical duties as assigned.

Requirements
  • At least one year of secretarial or clerical work experience, or possess a Certified Professional Secretary Certificate.
  • Vocational/Technical training in an area of secretarial science or office/business studies can substitute at a rate of 720 classroom hours for the required work experience.
  • A high school diploma or its equivalent with previous work experience in a law enforcement or correction setting can substitute for the required work experience.

Support of knowledge, skills, and abilities should be demonstrated on the application, in the education, in the work experience, in the work sample, in the interview and/or during reference checks.

Additional Information

Background Screening Requirement: The Florida Department of Corrections requires all job applicants and volunteers to pass a Level 2 background check as per Chapter 435, Florida Statutes. This check must be completed before they can start working or volunteering.

Employment Eligibility: The Florida Department of Corrections only hires U.S. citizens and those authorized to work in the U.S. FDC uses E‑Verify to confirm an employee’s eligibility to work after completing the I‑9 form. The Florida Department of Corrections does not currently support H‑1B visa sponsorship.
