Description

Permit Technician – Miami, FL

Responsibilities
  • Provide information and guidance to the general public regarding application procedures for all types of building permits.
  • Review permit applications for required information and documentation.
  • Distribute applications for necessary reviews and monitor the progress of permit review.
  • Verify completion of all required reviews and notify applicants of approved permits.
  • Serve as liaison between reviewing agencies and applicants.
  • Perform specialized processing functions for permits and track permits through the inspection process.
  • Maintain building permit packets with detailed files of official records.
  • Address public records requests, handle customer phone calls, and assist customers at the counter.
  • Resolve customer questions and issues regarding permit requirements; refer technical questions to appropriate staff and advise customers of actions taken.
  • Use scanners for image documents as required.
  • Maintain confidentiality of records and perform other related duties as necessary or assigned.
  • Attend work on a regular and consistent basis.
Position Requirements
  • High school graduation or GED and three (3) years of general clerical experience, including a minimum of two (2) years in strong customer service.
  • Preferred: minimum of two (2) years of experience in construction, building, or permitting, and experience with permitting software.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of basic land development and construction permit requirements.
  • Knowledge of general permit processing and procedures.
  • Knowledge of county offices and functions.
  • Knowledge of land development and construction terminology.
  • Professional, courteous interaction with the public.
  • Ability to accurately answer questions and resolve problems or refer to appropriate office.
  • Ability to follow check lists and recognize different types of required exhibits and plans.
  • Hands‑on experience with desktop computer applications and office equipment.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions.
  • Effective interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to commute to other office locations as needed.
Physical Demands

Primarily sedentary work requiring sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, and standing. Able to move around an office, lift and carry up to 10 pounds, look at a computer screen for long periods, and operate keyboard and other office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement. Requires visual acuity and the ability to speak, hear, and see.

Work Environment

Inside office environment. Ability to perform shop math, read and comprehend instructions, reports, permits, and applications. Ability to speak clearly and concisely and write detailed information in clear English.
