Senior Mechanical Inspector

Overview

Highly responsible, administrative, supervisory, and technical work in enforcing compliance with applicable national, state, and local laws, codes, ordinances and regulations in the City's Building Department through reviewing construction plans and specifications of new and existing building structures and properties. Work includes offices and field duties.

• Conduct technical field inspections of building equipment and installations
• Review building plans, blueprints, specifications, and materials lists to determine compliance with applicable regulations and good mechanical practices; recommend approval or rejection
• Act as the Chief Mechanical Inspector in the absence of the Chief Mechanical Inspector
• Assign and investigate reported and unreported hazards, possible safety problems, and violations of code
• Issue permits and certifications dependent upon compliance with standards; assist applicants in completing necessary forms
• Recommend methods, materials, equipment and alterations to assist in compliance with accepted standards
• Testify in court and before related boards; obtain documentation and prepare testimony
• Prepare and maintain reports, records, and correspondence concerning mechanical enforcement and inspection activities; enter inspection requests and results into computer database
• Perform related work as needed

• Shall reflect the requirements of the South Florida Building Code, currently:
• A Master General Mechanical contractor with certification by the Miami-Dade County Construction Trades Qualifying Board for at least five (5) years and five (5) years of field experience under that certification, OR
• A State Certified Mechanical contractor with certification by the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board for at least five (5) years and five (5) years of field experience under that license, OR
• A Florida Licensed Professional Engineer with a mechanical license and five (5) years of field experience under that license
• Attain Provisional Mechanical Inspector and Plans Examiner certification from the Florida Board of Code Administrators and Inspectors within ninety (90) days of appointment
• Attain Standard Mechanical Inspector and Plans Examiner certification from the same board within twelve (12) months of appointment
• Attain Mechanical Inspector and Plans Examiner certification from the Dade County Board of Rules and Appeals within ninety (90) days of appointment
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, coworkers, the press, the general public and diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability, political affiliation, gender identity or sexual orientation
• Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in accordance with city ethics and conflicts of interest policies; strong understanding of ethical behavior
• Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance
• Ability to report to work as directed during an emergency as an essential employee of the City of Miami Beach

• Must have the use of sensory skills to communicate and interact with others via telephone and personal contact
• Physical capability to use office equipment such as word processor, calculator, copier, and fax machine
• Some standing, walking, moving, climbing, bending, kneeling, crawling, and reaching
• Must have the physical ability to bend, crawl, and climb at construction sites and within buildings
• Must be able to drive an automobile and perform on-site inspections at locations not accessible to the physically handicapped
