Full-time (40 hours per week)
Base Hourly:$22.00
Class/Calendar:B23,12 months

Job Summary:To operate heavy equipment used in trade to prepare ground locations for immediate use or for next phase of construction; to repair surfaces or structures to ensure health and safety of students, district personnel and public.
Prior to employment or during the first 3 months of new hire probationary period, drug and alcohol testing shall be required of all new contract employees who work in Grounds. Any applicants having a confirmed positive test shall not be eligible for employment.
Key Responsibilities:- Safely operate graders, loaders, backhoes, dump trucks, trenchers and various other types of heavy equipment
- Perform work assignments in accordance with verbal and written instruction
- Operate and use various power equipment and hand tools to perform all grounds construction work in a safe, efficient and timely manner
- Perform rough and fine grading for playgrounds, landscape areas, asphalt and concrete pads
- Construct and renovate athletic fields; maintain outdoor aspects
- Excavate and backfill for utilities, trenches, footings and foundations
- Transport various materials to and from job sites via dump trucks
- Inspect and perform minor service and maintenance on heavy equipment
- Calculate amount or materials needed for jobs
- Assist other crews in the performance of all tasks related to grounds construction
- Assist other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities
- Assists with other assigned duties as appropriate to the area of assignment and Mesa Public Schools
- High School education or equivalent preferred
- Valid, or ability to obtain within 90 days, Arizona CDL driver’s license with tanker endorsement
- Minimum two years’ experience in the safe operation of various heavy equipment (i.e. road grader, backhoe, loaders, dump trucks, trenchers, forklifts, etc.)
- Field experience in the use of survey instruments, laser grading and blueprints
- Experience with construction related tools and equipment

- Knowledge of excavating, grading and compacting of various top soils, aggregates, asphalt and other fill materials
- Working knowledge of ‘Blue Stake’ color codes and markings
- Knowledge of athletic field, building, chain link and flood and sprinkler irrigation layouts
- Ability to perform work assignments in accordance with verbal and/or written instructions and with minimum supervision
- Ability to work overtime and to change schedules with minimal notice; willingness to work non-regular hours (weekends, night shift, swing shift, holidays)
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and supervisors
Physical Requirements:
- Most work is performed outdoors, often in varying weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, or snow
- Work sites include school grounds, athletic fields, parking lots, and construction or renovation areas
- Involves operating heavy machinery such as backhoes, bulldozers, front-end loaders, forklifts, trenchers, and other specialized vehicles
- May also involve transporting equipment between schools or facilities within the district.
