Job SummaryTo assist in the identification, screening, testing, placement and instruction of ELL students; and to prepare and process record keeping and materials necessary for documentation to support English Language Learner services
English Language Acquisition Department Proficiency TestKey Responsibilities
- Assist in the identification, screening, testing and placement of ELL students
- Assist in the delivery of individual or group instruction with teacher supervision
- Serve as a liaison between the ELAD office and school site
- Interpret at individual parent-teacher conferences under the direction of the SEI teacher
- Prepare and process record keeping and materials necessary for documentation to convey information to appropriate parties
- Maintain open communication with site and district personnel
- Assist in training new SEI technicians at school site
- Attend staff development in-services and meetings
- Assists with other assigned duties as appropriate to the area of assignment and Mesa Public Schools
- High School education
- Associate’s Degree or 60 college credit hours required at time of hire OR pass the Para Pro Test provided by the district free of charge
- Pass ELAD language proficiency test
- Experience working with children
- Bilingual, in Spanish, with English and second language literacy skills
- Experience in an instructional setting
- Models the attributes and skills of the MPS Portrait of a Graduate

- Computer proficiency to include use of basic software applications (Word, Excel, etc)
- Ability to effectively communicate (verbal and written) including via phone and to relate and interact with students and parents/guardians
- Ability to provide and conduct learning experiences for individuals or small groups
- Ability to organize, prioritize and meet deadlines with minimum supervision and use initiative and take direction
- Ability and willingness to be flexible and adapt to changes
- Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with district personnel
Physical Requirements
- Typically works at one or more school sites (elementary, middle, or high school)
- May work in classrooms, offices, or resource centers assisting teachers and students
- Regularly works with English Learner (EL) students to provide language support services
- Works closely with teachers, instructional staff, administrators, and possibly parents
- May need to assist in multiple classrooms or school locations throughout the day
- Must be able to use standard office and educational tools (e.g., computers, projectors, paper materials)
- May occasionally need to lift materials or equipment weighing up to 25 lbs
