The Role
The Associate Specialist / Specialist is responsible for bringing in business, cataloguing and coordinating the sale and property, requiring in-depth knowledge of client relationship management and relevant markets for the art category working in close collaboration with a global team of specialists.
Specific duties & responsibilities will include but are not limited to- Develop business contacts and strategic opportunities, including auction and private sales
- Identify, cultivate, and maintain relationships with clients across all categories (collectors, dealers, corporations, advisors, institutions), including the ability to work with major clients.
- Partner with overseas specialists and the Client Advisory team on appraisals to drive long‑term business and re‑engage inactive clients.
- Review incoming photo inquiries and assess property for sale potential and value (pricing sessions).
- Research property authenticity, bibliography, provenance and exhibition history; write and prepare catalogue essays.
- Work on catalogue production and layout.
- Work with team to ensure the successful completion of photography, layout, and final sign-off of each catalogue and sale
- Prepare condition reports of consigned property prior to the auction
- Coordinate pre‑sale exhibition setup with departmental and global teams.
- Participate in pre‑selling upcoming auctions through touring, events and other targeted marketing efforts.
- Work with Press and Marketing to support outreach and promotional initiatives.
- Engage with buyers during sale week to market and pre-sell the sale
- Participate in telephone bidding during live auctions and assist clients throughout sale week.
- Proactively promote global sales, partnering with the Client Strategy department to target clients, identify interest, and register bids
- Attend and monitor competitors’ auctions and track results to maintain market awareness.
- Actively participate in events, art fairs, and other functions to represent Christie’s.
- Maintain and continually strengthen specialist knowledge
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
- Minimum of 5 years’ paid work experience within the industry
- Knowledge of the auction business
- Demonstrated ability in appraising property and business-getting.
- Proficiency in E-mail, spreadsheet, word processing and presentation software (Microsoft Office preferred).
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including superior spoken and written English, Cantonese and Mandarin.
- Ability to learn new internal systems and program quickly
- Client service oriented with strong negotiation and influencing skills.
- Demonstrated ability to multi-task and prioritise and manage deadlines.
- Strong follow‑up skills with high attention to detail.
- Ability to excel within a team environment while also independently managing projects.
