Job Description & How to Apply Below

Our client is a world-class industrial engineering firm with nearly 70 years of experience delivering innovative structural, mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering solutions. With a foundation built in Pittsburgh's steel and aluminum industries, our client has grown into a nationally recognized firm serving clients across steel, aluminum, chemical, glass, automotive, oil & gas, power generation, and institutional markets.

Position Overview

We are seeking a skilled Structural Designer to join our growing engineering team. In this role, you will be responsible for producing detailed structural design drawings and documentation for a wide variety of heavy industrial projects. Working closely with licensed structural engineers and project managers, you will support projects ranging from mill buildings and crane structures to equipment foundations, pipe supports, and elevated platforms across our client’s core markets.

This role is ideal for a detail-oriented designer with hands‑on experience in AutoCAD or Autodesk Inventor who thrives in a fast-paced, multi-project environment and takes pride in delivering accurate, high-quality technical drawings.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop detailed structural design drawings including plans, sections, elevations, and connection details using AutoCAD or Autodesk Inventor
  • Produce 2D and 3D structural models for industrial facilities including mill buildings, equipment structures, platforms, stairs, walkways, and pipe bridges
  • Draft structural steel and concrete design documents in compliance with AISC, ACI, IBC, and applicable local building codes
  • Coordinate with structural engineers to incorporate analysis results from STAAD/Pro into design documentation
  • Support the design of crane runway systems, crane girders, and heavy‑lift structures for industrial facilities
  • Develop drawings for elevated supports including storage bins, silos, conveyors, material handling systems, and air/fume exhaust ductwork
  • Prepare drawings for utility system supports including transmission towers, pipe bridges, and steam line supports
  • Assist in producing material take-offs, bill of materials, and project specifications
  • Coordinate across engineering disciplines (mechanical, electrical, civil, piping) to ensure design compatibility and clash avoidance
  • Maintain drawing logs, revision control, and organized project documentation in accordance with RTP standards
  • Support field verification activities and construction administration as needed
  • Adhere to RTP's safety standards and zero-incident culture on all project deliverables
Required Qualifications
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Drafting/Design Technology, Structural Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related field -- or equivalent professional experience
  • 3+ years of structural drafting or design experience in an industrial, commercial, or heavy construction environment
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or Autodesk Inventor; both is a plus
  • Ability to read and interpret structural engineering drawings, specifications, and design calculations
  • Solid understanding of structural steel and concrete design principles and standard detailing practices
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple concurrent deliverables under deadline
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills for coordination with engineers and project teams
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in heavy industrial markets such as steel, aluminum, power generation, chemical, or oil & gas
  • Familiarity with STAAD/Pro structural analysis software outputs and how they translate to design drawings
  • Experience designing structures subject to dynamic or seismic loading conditions
  • Knowledge of AISC, ACI, IBC, and AIST Standard 13 design code requirements
  • Experience designing crane runways, mill buildings, or overhead crane structures
  • Familiarity with material handling systems including conveyors, bins, silos, and bucket elevators
  • Revit or BIM modeling experience is a plus
  • Field construction experience or exposure to construction administration activities
What Our Client Offers
  • Competitive base salary commensurate with experience
  • Comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, and vision coverage
  • Mentorship from senior structural engineers with decades of heavy industrial experience
  • Exposure to complex, large-scale industrial projects across multiple market sectors
  • Opportunities for professional growth, skills development, and career advancement
  • Industry-leading safety record: zero lost-time incidents since 2014
