About The Job

The Attending Veterinarian (AV) reports to the Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development and oversees the institution's animal care program, ensuring adequate veterinary care, humane treatment, regulatory compliance, and high welfare standards. The AV leads a team providing direct animal care and collaborates with researchers, staff, and students to adhere to animal use protocols.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provides consultation or clinical case management, including review of clinical records and determining appropriate treatment
  • Performs complex examinations, analyzes results, and writes prescriptions; reviews reports and interprets advanced results
  • Maintains animal health records (manual and computerized)
  • Oversees animal care on experimental protocols and operational animal care functions
  • Performs audits of completed clinical work
  • Communicates with researchers, students and the community regarding laboratory animals in research
  • Serves on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee; provides veterinary review on all animal use protocols and guidance on policy creation
  • May present at educational conferences or case management conferences
Qualifications

Required:

  • D.M.V. / V.M.D. or equivalent veterinary degree and 5 years of directly related, progressively responsible experience as a veterinarian

Preferred:

  • For Research Facilities: ACLAM diplomate (American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine)

Requisite Skills, Knowledge And Abilities:

  • Advanced clinical and diagnostic skills for advanced veterinarian duties
  • Broad knowledge of traditional laboratory animal species; ability to work with non-traditional species
  • Knowledge of and ability to manage biosafety level 3 facilities and breeding/management of genetically engineered rodents and fish
  • Knowledge of field research; strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience teaching animal handling and husbandry to students
  • Maintaining animal health records (manual and computerized)
  • Familiarity with electronic/medical records systems
  • Must be licensed or willing to become licensed to practice veterinary medicine in California
  • For Clinical Facilities:
    Board certified or Board eligible in a specialty area; if eligible, must become board certified within three years
  • USDA National Veterinary Accreditation preferred
