CompensationThe University of California, Merced is providing a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. Salary range: $135,000 – $175,000. Offers are based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

About the JobThe Attending Veterinarian (AV) reports to the Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development. The AV leads the institution’s animal care program, ensuring humane treatment, welfare, and regulatory compliance. Key responsibilities include oversight of animal care and use, collaboration with IACUC staff and committees, and providing advanced veterinary services to support research and teaching. The AV applies expert veterinary knowledge to complex medical, surgical, and diagnostic work and provides consultation on difficult cases.
The AV collaborates with researchers, staff, and students to ensure adherence to animal use protocols.
- Provides consultation or clinical case management for difficult cases, reviews clinical records, and assesses treatment plans.
- Performs complex examinations, analyzes results, discusses diets, and writes prescriptions. Reviews reports and interprets advanced results.
- Maintains animal health records (manual and computerized).
- Oversees animal health on experimental protocols and supervises operational animal care functions.
- Performs audits of completed clinical work and communicates with researchers, students, and the community regarding laboratory animal use.
- Serves on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC); provides veterinary review of all animal use protocols and contributes to policy development.
- May present at educational conferences or case management discussions in the area of specialization.
Required:
- D.M.V. / V.M.D. or equivalent veterinary degree and 5 years of directly related, progressively responsible experience as a veterinarian.
Preferred:
- For Research Facilities: ACLAM diplomate (American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine).
Requisite skills, knowledge and abilities:
- Advanced clinical and diagnostic skills for complex veterinary duties; ability to diagnose and recommend treatment.
- Broad knowledge of traditional laboratory animal species and willingness to work with non-traditional species.
- Knowledge of and ability to manage biosafety level 3 facilities and breeding/management of genetically engineered rodents and fish.
- Experience with field research; strong interpersonal and communication skills with clients, researchers, students, and staff.
- Experience teaching basic animal handling and husbandry; ability to oversee DVM students, residents, and technicians.
- Competent in maintaining animal health records (manual and computerized); familiarity with electronic medical record systems.
- Licensure:
Must be licensed or willing to become licensed to practice veterinary medicine in California. - Clinical Facilities:
Board certified or Board eligible in a specialty area (e.g., ABVT, ACVP, ACVM); if Board eligible, certification within three years of hire. - USDA National Veterinary Accreditation preferred.
- Campus vivarium and research facilities
- Full-time, Monday–Friday schedule
- Exposure to laboratory animals and research environments
