Position: Custodian (Limited Pool)

Overview

The University of California, Merced is hiring a Custodian to perform a wide variety of cleaning tasks under the supervision of the Housing Custodial Supervisor. The position is a temporary, hourly role with a competitive pay range of $21.05 to $23.71 per hour, with a minimum hourly rate of $25 for new employees. The position reopens every six months and closes on 06/30/2026.

Responsibilities
  • Perform daily cleaning duties such as mopping, dusting, sweeping, and sanitizing of floors, walls, ceilings, windows, and other surfaces throughout campus housing facilities.
  • Maintain cleanliness and security of assigned areas and report any loss, damage, or safety hazard.
  • Assist with emergency cleanup projects, maintain closet inventory of equipment and supplies, and perform minor maintenance on cleaning equipment.
  • Follow the master cleaning schedule and perform on‑spot inspections to correct discrepancies immediately.
  • Lock and secure unoccupied areas according to UC and Housing guidelines and submit regular written supply requests.
  • Comply with UC Merced and Department policies on occupational safety, chemical handling, and proper use of cleaning equipment.
Technical Responsibilities
  • Dust, mop, and auto scrub front and back of house floors daily.
  • Clean stairs, hallways, corridors, walls, moldings, boards, exterior steps, terraces, roof decks, window sills, and other designated areas.
  • Clean venetian blinds, radiators, grills, intake and exhaust vents, light fixtures, elevator interiors, tracks, and stainless steel counters, chairs, tables, doors, partition glass, shower stalls, handicapped benches, glass panels, and windows.
  • Polish metal fixtures and handrails.
  • Clean public and residential restrooms, toilets, urinals, fixtures, mirrors, and replenish soap and paper goods.
  • Empty and clean trash and recycling receptacles; lift and dump containers into trash chutes and dumpsters.
  • Dust, clean, and/or polish cabinets, desks, furnishings, conference or dining tables, wood wall paneling, and metal surfaces.
  • Perform on‑spot cleaning inspections and correct discrepancies immediately; wear appropriate protective equipment.
  • Lock unoccupied areas/offices after cleaning and report all lost and found property to proper authorities.
  • Perform minor maintenance on cleaning equipment and other janitorial duties as assigned.
Leadership and Communication
  • Establish and maintain a positive, cooperative working relationship with residents, students, and the campus community.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and written; submit regular written supply requests and written work orders, damage reports, and common area furniture inventories.
  • Maintain proficiency at current level and update knowledge through training sessions and mandatory meetings.
  • Safeguard keys and present keys when requested.
  • Promptly report accidents, hazardous conditions, and any security concerns on the job.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • At least six months of experience in a custodial cleaning operation, or a combination of training and experience.
  • Valid Class C California Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.

  • Follow safety procedures for biological, chemical, and radiation hazards and use cleaning chemicals correctly.
  • Operate vacuums, floor scrubbers, polishers, and carpet steam extractors; determine when equipment repairs are necessary.
Performance Expectations
  • Comply with the Facilities Management Safety Program and UC Merced policies and procedures.
  • Work in various environmental conditions, including outdoors, wet and damp areas, and areas with odors, fumes, and dust.
