Job Summary

Merced College is seeking a creative and forward‑thinking full‑time, tenure‑track Instructional Designer faculty member with teaching experience to join our Innovation Center team. This position is expected to be performed primarily onsite and reports to the Dean of Innovation and Institutional Effectiveness. The role helps shape the future of teaching and learning at our institution. We are looking for an educator who brings fresh curriculum ideas, a strong grounding in research‑based design principles, accessibility, and learning science, and a genuine passion for supporting faculty and students.

The ideal candidate will have experience teaching in online, hybrid, or in‑person environments and will be excited to contribute to emerging efforts in AI‑enhanced instruction, Immersive Learning, Competency‑Based Education (CBE), and assessment development for Credit for Prior Learning (CPL).

Core Responsibilities

As part of the Innovation Center team, this faculty leader will champion equitable, accessible, and high‑impact teaching practices.

Responsibilities include:

  • Consultation and training on the delivery of innovative instruction.
  • Maintaining Regular Substantive Interaction (RSI).
  • Leveraging the Canvas Learning Management System for course delivery and evaluation.
  • Supporting curriculum development across the College.
  • Contributing to instructional design projects, learning outcomes assessment, and campus‑wide initiatives that elevate student success.
Instructional Designer Duties
  • Develop and implement effective online education courses.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff in designing and developing course content, including integration of media technologies into traditional course content.
  • Assist in development of course templates for all departments.
  • Develop and deliver workshops on online education training programs, course development, and concepts of online course delivery.
  • Create and publish user documentation, including web resources for supported technology tools and software.
  • Assist with the implementation of various college, district, and statewide initiatives.
  • Assist faculty with understanding and complying with accessibility requirements for online courses, face‑to‑face courses, and related digital learning content.
  • Maintain, train, and update best practices in the area of instructional design.
  • Participate in evaluation, selection, testing, and implementation of hardware and software tools, technologies, and services that empower faculty and enhance teaching/learning experiences and student services.
  • Provide related online education support by troubleshooting and resolving technology and system access issues.
  • Assist with the Educational Technology Training Center support services to faculty, students, and leadership, as needed.
  • Participate in the preparation and composition of status reports for ongoing projects.
  • Engage in data inquiry and self‑assessment to develop strategies for student success, persistence, and equity.
  • Provide instruction in accordance with established course outlines and expectations.
  • Participate in the development and review of curriculum.
  • Participate in the development of teaching–learning methods and materials.
  • Participate in departmental, area, and campus professional activities/committees.
  • Participate in the College's learning outcomes assessment program, including course, program, and institutional assessments.
Typical Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Instructional Design/Technology or Educational Technology.
  • OR equivalent education and experience as follows:
  • Master's degree in any discipline AND experience in instructional design, educational technology, and/or online learning development AND current knowledge and experience in Instructional Design and related Learning Management Systems (e.g., Blackboard, Canvas).
  • Demonstrated experience with online instruction and/or possession of online instruction certification.
