The Dean of Student Services serves as a dynamic, visionary leader dedicated to advancing student achievement and closing equity gaps at Merced College. This role is part of a collaborative, forward‑thinking team committed to improving student outcomes. The Dean works closely with managers, faculty, and classified professionals, playing a key role in implementing statewide and local initiatives that support equitable student success.

General DescriptionThe Dean operates the Counseling Department, Welcome Center, Office of Relations with Schools, Articulation, the Career/Transfer Center, ASMC, Student Activities, and Student Success and Support Programs (SSSP). Responsibilities include supervision of outreach, recruitment, probation, grievances, and related initiatives, as well as strategic policy development, budget oversight, faculty selection, and program review. Collaboration with other deans and departments is essential to advance student success for all groups.
EssentialFunctions
- Provide administrative leadership for Counseling, Student Activities, Community Outreach, Re‑Entry Services, and Student Peer Assistance Programs.
- Work closely with Faculty Leads for Counseling to administer a comprehensive program of student support services.
- Develop and implement Student Services programs and oversee budgets and staff scheduling.
- Co‑ordinate services among student services programs and participate in SSSP implementation.
- Interpret, implement, and review policies in Student Services.
- Plan, coordinate, and develop educational plans with other deans.
- Initiate goals consistent with the District’s mission.
- Hire, supervise, and evaluate faculty, management, and classified staff.
- Maintain evaluative methodology and generate reports to assess accomplishments.
- Serve on District committees and promote a climate of continuous improvement.
- Develop program reviews and collaborate with the Office of Institutional Effectiveness.
- Recommend policy development to the Vice President of Student Services.
- Act as Chief Student Services Officer in the absence of the Vice President.
- Supervise and evaluate staff and perform related duties as assigned.
- Student support programs and services delivery.
- Federal/state regulations on veteran benefits, equity, basic skills, and student support.
- Budget development and administration principles.
- Research methodologies for needs assessments and disproportionate impact.
- Title 5 of the California Code of Regulations and pertinent Education Code sections.
- California State Chancellor’s legal opinions.
- Community college mission and collective bargaining agreements.
- Interpersonal, leadership, team‑building, and communication skills.
- District operations, policies, and objectives.
- Computer‐based administrative and educational systems.
- Program development and administration practices.
- Report preparation procedures.
- Basic computer software (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Contribute as an effective team member in a culturally diverse workplace.
- Communicate orally and in writing.
- Facilitate meetings and prepare funding proposals.
- Identify needs of underserved students.
- Manage interdisciplinary teams and innovative programs.
- Build rapport with diverse students, faculty, and staff.
- Train, select, direct, supervise, and evaluate personnel.
- Analyze and interpret laws, regulations, contracts, and policies.
- Maintain current knowledge of program rules and restrictions.
- Analyze situations and adopt effective actions.
- Plan, organize, and implement projects, reporting progress to the Vice President.
- Compile oral and statistical reports concisely.
