Job Overview

Develops and teaches concepts and strategies for a variety of courses. May require teaching courses at MATC campuses, business, community, other sites, and online during the day, evening, and/or weekend. Related duties include participation in department and advisory meetings, course and curriculum development in traditional and non‑traditional formats, staff development, student advising, student outcome assessment, student organization involvement, recruitment and retention of students, and other duties as assigned.

Required to keep current with the latest trends and technologies in the discipline.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare and deliver engaging instruction in accordance with established curriculum guidelines.
  • Manage classroom/laboratory environments to ensure a conducive learning atmosphere.
  • Develop, monitor, and revise curriculum to maintain course effectiveness and relevance.
  • Manage equipment, supplies, and materials necessary for instructional activities.
  • Assess student performance and provide constructive feedback to support academic growth.
  • Advise students on academic matters and provide guidance to support their educational journey.
  • Collaborate with advisory committees, colleagues, and industry partners to enhance program effectiveness.
  • Attend departmental and institutional meetings to contribute to academic planning and decision‑making.
  • Promote educational programs, participate in student recruitment efforts, and support initiatives to retain students.
  • Support student organizations and activities to enrich their educational experience.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with business and industry partners to facilitate student opportunities and program growth.
  • Complete program evaluations, engage in continuous professional development, and stay current in the field.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support the overall mission and objectives of the institution.
Qualifications

Educational requirement:
Bachelor's degree in a deaf‑related field such as Sign Language Interpreting, Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Vocational Rehabilitation, or American Sign Language (ASL).

  • Minimum of 3 years (6,000 hours) of work experience as an educational sign language professional.
  • One of the following must be met:
    • At least one year of work experience within the last five years.
    • Two years of teaching in Sign Language in Education coursework at the post‑secondary level within the last five years.
  • Industry or vendor certification required:
    • Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) of 3.3 or higher.
    • Board for Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI) certification as granted by ODHH.
    • Wisconsin Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (WisRID) plus a letter of recommendation.
  • Licensure (desirable):
    • Valid Wisconsin State Sign Language Interpreter Licensure.
    • NIC, CSC, CT/CI, DI, or NAD certification.
    • Minimum of three years of working interpreter experience.
  • Strong background in American Sign Language and ability to translate and interpret using strong voice‑to‑sign skills.
  • Knowledge of assessment of student academic achievement techniques and experience with engaged and service learning strongly preferred.
  • Effective communication in both oral and written means and ability to relate successfully with students and staff of diverse cultural, social, and educational backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated standards of teaching excellence and MATC Career Essentials in development and delivery of instruction.
Application Materials
  • Unofficial transcripts for all degrees earned from an accredited institution. Transcripts must show the degree awarded or conferred.
Hours and Compensation

0.5 FTE. Number of hours worked per week will vary based on course load. Work is conducted during scheduled course hours, Monday‑Friday.

The hourly wage for all part‑time faculty is $40 per course hour of teaching. Part‑time faculty are also compensated for an additional 45 minutes of time for each hour of instruction to cover office hours and prep time, which is equivalent to $70 per hour. This starting hourly wage of $40 an hour is non‑negotiable.
