Occupational Therapy Assistant (Healthcare)

Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate patients within twenty-four (24) hours or one business day of physician referral. Document reasons for delays clearly in the medical record if evaluation cannot be completed within this timeframe.
  • Develop effective treatment plans and obtain approval from the referring physician.
  • Implement treatment plans and treat patients accordingly.
  • Assist the nursing department with training Restorative Aides.
  • Supervise Occupational Therapy Assistants in direct patient care and related activities, in accordance with state practice acts.
  • Communicate patient progress, issues, and plans with supervisors and team members.
  • Participate in Patient Care Conferences, Utilization Review meetings, and Rehabilitation Conferences as needed.
  • Contribute to staff training programs within the facility.
  • Maintain accurate records of evaluations, treatment notes, progress reports, and recertifications, complying with state practice acts and payer requirements.
  • Record any treatment modifications as per policies and procedures.
  • Instruct patients' families and nursing staff in maintenance and caregiver training in preparation for discharge.
  • Participate in discharge planning.
  • Recommend and facilitate ordering necessary durable medical equipment (e.g., braces, walkers, canes, grab bars) to promote patient independence.
  • Report equipment issues to ensure proper maintenance.
  • Establish positive and effective relationships with patients, families, staff, and colleagues.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervise Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants (COTAs), aides, and students.

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Therapy;
      Master's or Doctorate preferred.
    • Proficiency in computer skills, including programs like Casamba and Point Click Care.
    • Ability to read and interpret technical procedures, policies, and manuals.
    • Effective communication skills with managers, colleagues, and families.
    • Ability to apply mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
    • Strong problem-solving and reasoning abilities, with the capacity to interpret instructions in various formats.

    Licenses and Certifications: Licensed as an Occupational Therapist in the state; must meet continuing education requirements and maintain good standing.

    Physical Demands: Frequent standing, walking, reaching, talking, hearing, and frequent exertion of force; occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling; visual acuity required.

    Work Environment: Typically low to moderate noise levels; accommodations available for individuals with disabilities.
