Overview

Lake Catholic High School, a Catholic educational institution in Mentor, Ohio, serves approximately 550 students in grades 9–12. The School Counselor reports to the Assistant Principal of Academics and supports the school’s mission by providing counseling, academic guidance, and college/career planning aligned with Catholic values.

Responsibilities
  • Student Counseling and Support: Provide individual, small-group, and large-group counseling addressing academic, social-emotional, behavioral, and personal concerns. Support students through challenges such as stress, anxiety, grief, conflict, decision-making, and transitions. Identify at-risk students and provide targeted interventions and progress monitoring. Deliver skill-building programs that promote healthy decision-making, study skills, social development, and responsible behavior.
  • Academic Counseling and Intervention: Assist students with course selection, scheduling, graduation requirements, and academic planning. Monitor academic progress and collaborate with teachers and administrators to support student success. Participate in Student Assistance Teams and other intervention-based meetings to address academic and emotional needs. Provide pre-referral consultation and intervention services in accordance with state and federal guidelines.
  • College and Career Planning: Guide students through college, career, military, and vocational exploration. Support students and families with applications, essays, recommendations, testing, and financial aid processes. Coordinate college visits, career events, and communication related to postsecondary planning timelines.
  • Family, Staff, and Community

    Collaboration:

    Establish and maintain professional, supportive relationships with students and their families. Serve as a key point of contact for parents regarding student progress, concerns, and available supports. Consult with teachers and staff regarding student academic, behavioral, and organizational needs. Serve as a liaison to community mental health agencies and provide families with appropriate referral options.
  • Catholic Identity and Student Formation: Support and promote the Catholic mission and values of the school. Encourage student decision-making rooted in faith, moral development, service, and personal responsibility. Participate in school liturgies, retreats, and faith-based programming as appropriate.
  • Professional Practice and Compliance: Maintain accurate, confidential student records and complete required documentation, including consent forms, releases, and progress reports. Prepare and submit required accountability data, summaries of services, and reports to school leadership and external partners as needed. Adhere to professional ethical standards and all diocesan, state, and school policies. Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, in-service training, and supervisory meetings.

    Performance is evaluated annually based on adherence to professional standards, effectiveness of services, and alignment with school mission.
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in School Counseling or a related field
  • Valid state licensure or certification as a School Counselor
  • Experience working with adolescents, preferably in a Catholic high school setting
  • Knowledge of college admissions and postsecondary planning
  • Familiarity with student information systems and counseling tools
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with students, families, faculty, administrators, and outside agencies
  • Commitment to Catholic education and willingness to support the mission of the Church
