Job Summary

Be the clinical leader who keeps the hospital moving. As a Hospital Patient Flow Coordinator, you will lead real‑time bed management and patient placement strategy across the organization. You’ll collaborate with physicians, nursing leaders, admitting, and hospital administration to ensure patients are placed safely, efficiently, and appropriately.

This is not a task‑based role — it’s a hospital‑wide position that directly impacts quality, safety, and throughput.

What You’ll Do Lead Real‑Time Patient Placement
  • Maintain situational awareness of all hospitals census, staffing levels, and bed availability
  • Utilize EPIC Bed Planning and surgical/ancillary schedules to guide strategic placement decisions
  • Develop and adjust daily admission plans based on real‑time changes
Anticipate and Prevent Capacity Barriers
  • Monitor ED volumes, elective procedures, and clinic patterns to proactively predict bed demand
  • Coordinate hospital redirection and overcapacity status during high census periods
  • Partner with critical care and acute coordinators and unit leaders to anticipate admissions
Serve as the Central Liaison
  • Collaborate with Nurse Managers, Administrative Representatives, Physicians, Staffing Office, and Admitting
  • Facilitate in‑house transfers while considering acuity, equipment, and disease management needs
  • Provide guidance on admission status and medical necessity for direct admits
Support Critical Events
  • Active participant on yearly hospital drills as well as statewide accountability for mass casualty events
  • Engage in high‑stakes decision‑making during capacity surges
Drive Quality & Process Improvement
  • Monitor patient placement metrics
  • Lead bed flow huddles
  • Contribute to updates in Allocation of Services guidelines

Experience Description

A minimum of 4 years of nursing experience with at least 3 years in acute care nursing is required. Previous critical care or ED experience as an RN is preferred.

Education Description

Bachelors in Nursing is required. In lieu of a Bachelor’s degree, either an additional 3 years of experience or active enrollment in a Bachelors program with a defined end date is required.

Special Skills Description

Has strong verbal communication skills and is comfortable working in a fast‑paced environment. Communicates effectively in all areas of practice and to a variety of staff. Assesses his/her own communication skills during encounters with patients, families, physicians and staff. From these assessments seeks continuous improvement in communication and conflict resolution skills.

Licensure Description

Requires current state of Wisconsin Registered Nurse License or a Multi‑state Nursing License from a participating state in the NLC (Nurse Licensure Compact).
